PS, while electioneering yesterday for the Australian federal election, I found myself standing next to a candidate from a party at the other extreme of the political spectrum from my own, a tall white-haired older gentleman who looked a bit like Colonel Sanders.
I asked, what's your story? He told me he grew up in a small remote place called Wallup, where he was one of 13 students in a one-room schoolhouse and rode his horse there every day.
I thought, could there be a more Australian-outback-sounding name than Wallup?
There's a place called Wallup in Victoria. Wikipedia says it had 28 people in 2021, so I reckon that must be the place.
He got 2.2% of the vote. My candidate (and current member) is ahead at the moment, but we're still awaiting final results, 26.5 hours after polls closed.
