SOTU 697 - One, One, One or 1.11

UkeCan1

A one-word title by a one-word band.

I thought about "Barracuda" by Heart, but I went with "Africa" by Toto.

Hi Graham and thanks for hosting with such a cool theme. I managed to get one in. Going to see this band on Monday at the Piece Hall in Halifax. Slightly jel of Steve going to Glasto. Every year I think, we’ve been, we don’t need to go again and it would be too big for our daughter anyway…..but then I see the coverage and think hmmmmmmm…… if we were there I’d go and see Kneecap just on principle 👍…. Anyway, here’s Weezer with Buddy Holly and one of the greatest opening lines to a song ever if you ask me.

Just joined the new forum. Here's a first submission. An instrumental version of "If" by Bread. Thanks.

Welcome back, Kevin - it’s great to see you here! :-)

Here's one of my favorite ballads, done by a one-word band, and it's got a one-word title.
It was composed and sung by the band's drummer, who had had no writing credits at all in their first 3 studio albums. He was reluctant to share because he feared it was too lovey-dovey for the band's hard-rock image and sound. Turned out to be band's single most commercially successful song, reaching #7 in the US charts. It was a hit. The drummer never wrote any further songs for the band. To this day, the bassist says the drummer had no role in composing the song and he had lifted it from his guitarist in a previous band.

The home straight is coming into view and we’re up to 37 entries from 23 seasonistas, thank you.

As I said in the opening post I’m not going to be around at all tomorrow (Saturday), hopefully back home Sunday afternoon whereupon I’ll update the playlist and comment on all new entries.

SPILT BEER - Jim Yates

In 1991 I was playing in a group called The Piper's Hut, founded by my late friend Bernie Martin. We would meet each week to rehearse and one week when I introduced a tune I'd just written, I accidentally kicked over the beer that was on the floor by my feet. I said, "Oh Shit!" and finished playing the tune. Bernie always carried a small cassette recorder and he had been recording the tune to learn later.
The next week Bernie said, "Let's play Spilt Beer." We all said, "What's Spilt Beer?" and Bernie said, "That's Jim's new tune. It was either that or Oh Shit!" That's how my tune got its name.

This one came in at just over a minute and just under 1:11.

"One" is the 4th track on Metallica's 1988 album "…And Justice for All." Although what had been my favorite band in high school had not yet fully sold out to the recording industry's lure of commercial appeal, this song, which I think was the first Metallica tune ever to get regular airplay on FM radio, set the tone for what came later…

And it hits ALL FOUR boxes. The intro to the song lasts a full minute and a half - but I pared it to 1:11.

Here's a song with "one" in the title. Lots of good rhyming in this one. I especially like "Cupid" with "stupid."

Time for double bill from me to make up for not posting in tbe week. Two one word songs from me.

Firstly, Dizzy - a fine example of late 1960s bubblegum pop.

Secondly, after a change of both uke and hat, an instrumental, Apache. I tried to make it short enough to fit the 1 minute 11 seconds criterion, but failed, even if you cut me talking, though it's still pretty short.

And now for something completely different from what I usually do. One of my favorite songs with a one-word title by a one-name artist. I did this song once before, a long time ago, but this time I used the baritone with the same chord shapes so I would sing higher. Not one of his hits, but still a favorite of mine, from The Last in Line album.

I wrote down a bunch of fun songs with "one" in the title. But then it turned out the chords for most of them weren't on the internet. Some of them didn't even have the lyrics online. I figured this one out last night. This is the song "The One & Only" by NRBQ from their 1989 album "Wild Weekend".

Back home again, the playlist is up to date and I’ve commented on everything.

As usual, if I’ve missed anyone please let me know.

About 14 hours left if anyone else wants to join in the fun.

Hey Graham, thanks again for hosting! I wanted to get one more in. This is a song I teach to my more advanced senior classes. It's been a fun exercise in hearing myself play/sing this one. Not the easiest song to sing, but a real fun one to do! Cheers ~

One word band name: Clash

One word song title: Clampdown

And with this song recorded, I've recorded every song from the Clash's album London Calling. So, if you like, please enjoy this link to my brand new full cover album playlist, Ukulele Calling.

I picked Schlagzeile (or the English title, Headline) a one word title from Jürg Hochweber's second book of ukulele compositions, Ukulele in Action. I skipped the repeat of the A part, since it's repeated after box 2 of the B part anyway.

Check out Hochweber's website. His original music for guitar and ukulele is free to download. Here's the link to the second book.

Ralf and Sabine have got their entries in which can only mean one thing, Sotu 697 is officially over, I'll be back later with my customary short wrap.

Thanks everyone for a splendid week, we ended up with 47 songs from 26 seasonistas. In my wildest dreams I hoped we might get 50 entries but realistically thought that 40 would be good going. To end up closer to 50 than 40 is very pleasing indeed.

I usually break the songs down by the options available but alot of this weeks songs could have fitted easily into any of the first 3 options, so I won't bother.

It was also lovely to see some old faces joining in on this forum for the first time, you know who you are.

If anyone is thinking of hosting I personally think it is easier to do so on this forum than the old one which we frequented for almost 13 years. I was busy away from home for 3 days this week and still managed to keep up with everything relatively easily.

Until next time, bye folks and thanks again for taking part.
