SOTU 698 - YES!

So, having been through the list of past Season themes, twice, it seems we may have never done a season of Yes. Pretty easy this week, if "yes" is in the title or lyrics, or the song is about the main character getting to yes, I want to hear it. (With respect to the last, if you aren't sure whether your idea fits, I assure you, the answer is yes, yes it does).

If you absolutely must, you may play a song by the band Yes.

If you are inspired to write an original please follow the last bit of the above prompt and spin us a yarn about someone being moved from No to Yes for some reason.

Usual rules for the most part - start and end at midnight Hawaii time Saturday June 28 and Sunday July 5th, respectively, collaborations are welcome, featuring other instruments is ok but the ukulele should be front and center, and so on. You can always check out the "What are the Seasons of the Ukulele?" thread for all of your FAQ's.

I'll add a link to the Playlist as soon as the first few songs have come in. I'm looking forward to seeing what all you'll bring.

689 redux?

Season 689 was called "Getting to Yes", but it was about the spelling of the word, not about being positive. I think Chris Lanzon hosted a season about being positive a few months before that.

If I could learn "Going for the One" by Yes in the next day, it would count for two seasons! It's not likely to happen.

Well, ok, I knew I was probably wrong but we’re going to forge ahead anyway. Just to clarify though, the starting point should be that the word Yes is in the title or lyrics. I don’t recall ever saying that the use of Yes needed to be in a positive sense. I mean, there are lots of times lately where I think to myself, “Why yes, I do think we should burn this all down.”, which would qualify but also I think is not very positive.

Edit: and screaming “Yeeeaaaahhhhhhh!” like Rodger Daltry does not count. It’s gotta be “Yes”.

Will "yeah" not count as a substitute for "yes" if it is repeated throughout the song? (You have just ruined my first idea for a contribution!) And are we allowed to use "foreign" versions of "yes" … eg. "oui"? I might be being rather pedantic here, but I am, nonetheless, feeling VERY positive!

A few weeks back, for Jim's Yes theme + Del's onomatopoeia theme, I did "Tevye's Dream" from Fiddler on the Roof, wherein, via a faked nightmare, Tevye convinces wife Golde to let their eldest daughter Tzeitel marry her childhood sweetheart Motel the tailor, instead of the rich older widowed butcher Lazar Wolf.

In this song, "Miracle of Miracles", the next morning, Motel rejoices when Tzeitel brings him the amazing news.

Played on my new 8-string, Delilah, won for that very song … because Del said YES to me!!!

LimousinLil A song inspired by a pig - sort of ;-)
The composers (Gus Kahn and Walter Donaldson) were visiting Eddie Cantor one afternoon when Cantor's daughter Marjorie brought out one of her favorite toys, a walking mechanical pig. She wound it up and it started walking in rhythm while two notes kept coming from the little creature. Kahn started working lyrics to the notes in time with the pig, coming up with the title and opening line of the chorus. Eddie Cantor turned it into a hit.
Years later, Kahn commented that his take from the song constituted the largest amount of money a Jewish man had ever made from a pig :-D.

Thanks, Paul! I read that myself and was wondering whether to include it in my description; it's a brilliant story … just how you would like to imagine the inception of s song. Eddie Cantor recorded "Yes Sir, That's My Baby" in 1930.

I struggled to find a song for 689 which was far broader than this 🙂 I had decided that yeah meant yes but I see you've ruled that out. I think I found one though. But I did have to look through more than 100 charts I have to find a single song that has that lyric in it. So I think it's likely more limiting than one would think.

Clarification two:

“Yes” in a language other than English is fine. For example, “oui”, “si”, etc.

IT MUST BE “YES”. Combinations of words, contractions, etc. that achieve something like “yes” do not count.

The “getting to yes” is not a spelling bee, it is a change of mind from a position of “no” on something to a position of “yes” on something.

Thanks everyone for being good sports. Not the way I necessarily wanted to start off, but even after almost 13.5 years os seasons there are still some that take a day to find their footing I guess.

Cannot believe how many seasons I have missed, having fun playing open mics locally, but this is where my heart is. This one gives me sure shot at another T-Swizzle song, learning it as fast as I can- need to get a song in this week.

I know I covered this song a few months ago (for the "songs you hate to love/love to hate" theme), but I didn't have the 8 string then, and it's perfect for the song. It also feels like a song that had to be there this season, so here it is, in it's campy disco glory:

Written originally by blues guitarist Elvin Bishop, he asked one of his back up singers, Mickey Thomas, to sing it for him. I can't even dream of approaching what Mickey does with this 1976 hit, it was fun to learn and record regardless.
