Season 701 - TV, Animation & Biscuits

Thanks for hosting, and here's one from me - the theme song to the late 1990s British sitcom the Royle Family.

This is "Lithium Flower", the ending theme for an anime series about 20 years ago called "Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex". Music by Yoko Kanno, lyrics by Tim Jensen, originally sung by Scott Matthew. This was indirectly inspired by a comment I got from Sabine on a video a few years back that mentioned Kanno and Ghost in the Shell. (For a show about a cyborg, this song has a lot of lyrics about surfing.)

Too tempting to miss, so I am submitting something!

I have been busy painting lately. So many things to do so little time.

One of the many things I did was making a pinball game with Jon! He did the layout and nailing and rubber-necking, i mean rubber-banding, I did the art. When the marble hits the rubber bands the sensation of the spring is really satisfying. (Rubber bands are such a great invention!)

The plaster board is from a tip shop, came with a rectangular hole. (maybe a discard from a failed DIY attempt?)

OK. Here is the song I wrote this morning to showcase the pinball game, which I am supremely proud of! (Even though I had ended up more times in the vomitorium than going up the potato cake ramp or make the calamari ring circuit!)

Ah. How much fun we can have when we make the time, gather a few things and ideas to make a DIY pinball machine!

I also mention the names of 2 biscuits in the lyrics, can you spot them?

PS. I don't know what you call "crackers" in the US - but in Irish and UK English, the word has nothing to do with an old ingredient of Coca-Cola 😁. You can see what we call crackers below! Jacobs' are the BEST!

Singing In the Bathtub - Michael H. Cleary, Herb Magidson, Ned Washington (1929)

"Singing in the Bathtub" is featured in the first-ever Looney Tunes animated short, "Sinkin' in the Bathtub" (1930). The song appeared in 20 Warner Bros. animated shorts in total. Warner Bros.' ownership of the copyright saved royalty payments.
I first heard this from my friend Catfish Willie and actually learned it from a Cheap Suit Serenaders' LP.
I have sung it many times before this and apologise if you are gettin' sick of it.

Another instrumental TV theme. I was able to find a simple lead sheet that someone made for this piece so I had to give it a try. The ending theme for The Incredible Hulk TV series, that starred Bill Bixby and Lou Ferrigno.

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay doing the theme from "Psych" reminded me of this song because both shows were on about the same time, on the same network, and starred a detective who had nearly superhuman powers of perception. The first season of "Monk" had a breezy, jazzy instrumental theme, but beginning with the second season they changed to this song written and performed by Randy Newman.

I hope the connection to the theme isn’t too tenuous here - but apparently it’s possible to buy/make rose biscuits. They are flavoured and decorated with rose petals! Yuck! But conveniently this gives a connection to the band who recorded the song I’ve covered this week.

This song is all about the ghostly cows and the riders doomed to chase them forever, but it also mentions their horses.

And it was performed on The Muppet Show, with some glorious Muppet trumpet and a whole host of Muppet musicians and actors accompanying Johnny Cash ... so it's a twofer.

Hello again, Ylle! I didn't think I'd have a chance to do anything else this week, but the Family have taken themselves off today to do something "touristy", so I volunteered to stay at home and look after the dogs, which gave me time to record this. Apparently it comes from one of the two episodes of "The Simpsons" featuring "Flaming Moe."

Time for a quick party trick - 12th Street Rag, as used in the cartoon Spongebob Squarepants. A piano rag written in 1914, which Roy Smeck turned into a ukulele showcase piece - and some performers get really flash with techniques.

Are you asking me to remove your post because you feel bad for not having had time to watch others’ videos this week? Because, although it’s something that’s encouraged and always appreciated, there is no obligation to do so (unless you are the host for the week). And anyway, you are usually one of the most active and conscientious listeners/commenters on the forum, for which we are very grateful, so you really have nothing to worry about on that score. So unless you have another reason for asking me to remove your post (in which case please PM or email me), I will leave it in place for now. I hope that’s okay with you? 🙂
