Hi everyone! This week I thought it would be nice to celebrate one of my musical heroes. I had somehow started believing he'd live forever but, alas, we lost him last week at the age of 97. I am, as you may have guessed, talking about Tom Lehrer. So let's celebrate not only his songwriting - which he only did for a very short time, all told - but also what he did with the rest of his life, which was teaching Mathematics and Musical Theatre at university. (Not both at the same time, I assume, but I'd definitely turn up at a course of Mathematics and Musical Theatre)
So, there's three options:
- Any Tom Lehrer song you like. Hopefully that explains itself.
- Anything with some kind of link to mathematics. For this, any mathematical term in the title or lyrics will be fine. I'm not picky, if you think it fits, it fits. Sums, problems, plus, add, multiply, divide, times (that one seems particularly promising), equals, right through to infinity, function, integrate, differentiate, and more. The only thing I'm explicitly ruling out is that the link needs to be more than merely a number (so, for example, just having the word "one" in the song is not enough. But the word "number" is fine.)
- Anything with a link to musical theatre. Most obviously, a song from a musical will fit.
Usual rules apply (see the FAQ for details). Originals and collaborations are very welcome. Actually it'd be entertaining to have an original song that you think would fit in a musical, but if you're going to do that, please at least tell us the plot 🙂.
Here is the PLAYLIST.
Fight fiercely, let's see if we all go together when we go, and let's hope no cadavers are rotating in any crypts. Ready to go at midnight Hawaiian time as always, and don't forget that we're still on the horse for another day or so!
