SOTU 704 Hey Baby Que Paso!

johnpoole

Thanks Dave. Arhoolie is a great record label. Big Joe Williams is on there. He wrote and plays " Baby Please Don't Go". There are a few on Arhoolie who have this song on their records. Big Joe used to play a 9 string guitar. I'm settling for 4 strin baritone through an amp and in open d tuning ..DF#AD.

Guys- thank you for putting a favorite to rest for me. Accordion was my first instrument and as a punk kid, playing la napoleara with a conjunto band, or playing some Irish licks for friends as Celt Punk took off…best times ever. Love that we can bring that spirited delivery on the uke. We do not at all have many videos…not even what I expected we would get, but boy do we have some great songs! Been hosting since week 16, and well- y’all are dropping gold. Thank you for these songs. You folks are truly the finest I have ever met. See you tomorrow. Make sure I got ya in the playlist.

johnpoole THEM is such a favorite of mine (they play this song)….such a great band, and here we have even better. My brain blew up here, thanks for the Arhoolie dig.

I'm off on holiday, so I went for low-hanging fruit.

I must admit that I am not familiar with tejano/conjunto music. Flaco Jiménez is a new name to me. I noticed he covered La Bamba, and with only three chords and a melody everyone knows, I thought I'd give it a go.

Thanks for hosting, Dave!

Hello again, Dave! Flaco Jiménez collaborated with Bob Dylan and this is a song of his I'd never heard before today, and it came as a surprise because I've never really associated Dylan with Country. I wouldn't recommend my being anybody's "baby tonight" unless you enjoy being woken up by a dog barking for no apparent reason at 4 o'clock in the morning. (Actually, in the course of the last two nights, Merlin has eaten his way through my telephone book and two shoes - not a matching pair and not mine; the family is still here! Would anyone like a slightly used, enormous 9-month old puppy with a voracious appetite for …. well, absolutely anything?)

Listened back and didn't particularly like it, what sounds ok at midnight often sounds garbage the next morning, sorry mate.

Would have tried something else but I'm away on holiday again.

"Stand By Me", by King, Lieber, and Stoller , for concert ukulele with singing, overdub of Ashbory Ubass. The Season's subject played on a version of this that was on a Ry Cooder record I used to own.

Thanks for hosting the Season, Dave!

I'll have to explore this Flaco fellow some more. Looks like he's played with Buck Owens, so here's some Buck. Short and sweet. Thanks for hosting Dave.

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay

I saw this one on Flaco's live album and thought "hey, I can play that one."

I've never been able to manage a syncopated polka strum and sing at the same time. This is as close as I can get to an oom-pah beat and still be able to sing. Another Texas Tornados song.

TCK

I tell you what, boy can you folks pick them and deliver them!!! May not be a ton of songs, but damn aren’t y’all bringing exactly what is needed here. Much love- see you all tomorrow! Make sure I got you where you need to be👍🏻

There is a little place right near Cloverdale that fits the week. Just a short spell up the road actually. Could walk there. Perhaps someone can play a request? That river runs a block from my house, can ya dig it?

TCK

Ok- I forgot, I want to post this. I have no clue who is playing accordion (it sounds like Santiago Jimenez, Flaco’s brother), but Doug Sahm and accordion have always been closely tied. This is a tribute record to Doug by Son Volt, 1/2 of the famous Uncle Tupelo split. If so inclined, it is so good.

Good to have you hosting Dave. For my first this week, I'll go for the Bob Dylan option

And why not another? This time, a folk song first recorded by Blind Alfred Reed, but rearranged by Ry Cooder and featuring on his debut album. Yes, I've done this one before, but this time I've got a brand new instrument - a steel string baritone, which hopefully for Seasons purposes still counts as a ukulele.

Here's a song that Flaco did with Ry.
Hey Dave, I'm sure you've heard them do this old tune made famous by Jim Reeves.

Such a great bit of song to come home to after playing our local open mic! I threw som flaco at them with Streets of Bakersfield, and a few other songs that had them scratching their heads (our local open Mic is at a place where the patrons are rednecks, and the players are far from). Anyway- so glad to come home and find these songs. Thank you!!!

TCK

Still patiently awaiting my song about my river 😉

TCK The Thames? The Seine? The Danube?

YorkSteve

Looking back I have done this song three times before, at roughly five year intervals. But the last time was only six months ago, so I thought I'd give it a few days in case someone else gave it a go. Now it's Friday, and here it is. Originally on the soundtrack of "The Borderline", and then recorded again by Ry Cooder, this time with Flaco, on his "Get Rhythm" album.
