Hello, and welcome to Season 716 - Bring Back the Bootleg!
I was thinking about a collector/used record shop I worked in during the late 80’s. Every 4 or 5 months the owner would turn up at an odd hour, some nervous looking guy would come in and ask for him, they would quietly go to an empty corner of the parking lot and open the boot of the visitor’s station wagon. They’d be there a while discussing & gesturing about whatever was in the wagon, then my boss would come in with a box, tell me how much $ to give the visitor, then disappear into the backroom.
Why did the transaction seem so shady? What was in the box?? Bootlegs! Illegal live recordings of bands and concerts from all over the place. Bootleg LPs, CDs, cassettes were a thriving niche industry back then - but where is it at now? YouTube is full of bootlegs, but is there a way to make money making bootlegs these days or is it more of a labour of love? Here’s what Wikipedia has to say on the topic: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bootleg_recording
And here is a rundown of what qualifies for admission this season:
A Cover or Original song with the word the word bootleg(ger/ging/etc), boot or leg (singular) in the title of the song or name of the band (e.g., Bootsauce).
An Original or Cover song about a bootleg recording or about the bootlegging of any type of contraband. Or a song about a boot or a leg (singular).
A song from an illegal bootleg recording, or an official ‘bootleg’ release (e.g., The Bootleg Series from Bob Dylan). Please include info like the venue, city, date of the recording, or maybe the liner notes had an interesting factoid, and please share a story if there is one. Totally OK to cover a bootleg you just looked up on the internet.
Newcomers or first-time participants are welcome to bring any song they like to the season, please join us!
