May I ask for advice on the first hardware question. It's about strings on a tenor.
Let me preface my question by noting that I live in a medium-sized city in upper Myanmar. Mandalay is a wonderful town - it's got most of the nice things about city but with a fraction of the traffic, stress and pollution prevalent in larger urban areas worldwide. One thing it occasionally lacks in is shopping choices on specialty products like ukulele strings. It is possible to get something shopped here, but shipping would cost the same or more than what I'm looking for today.
There are 5 or 6 nice music stores in the city, and they all stock multiple brands and price points for uke strings. All of them are labelled soprano/concert and high-G tuning. My old Oscar Schmidt tenor is sounding a little dull lately and it's been my designated Low-G instrument for a while now. If I used classical guitar strings like I do for my baritone… I don't recall trying that before. While in the high-end shop in town, I asked and they showed me sets of Ball and D'Andrio (sp?) string for 70,000 and 76,000 Kyats respectively. My God…..That would have been around USD 50 a year ago! Now, it's about 20. Not THAT much but it seemed like a lot. I balked.
While in a more reasonably-priced shop today, I went ahead and bought a set at only 10000 kyats (USD 2.50). Alice brand, which I've used before. I'll string em up and hope they sound good.
Is it okay to string a tenor with classical guitar strings? Is the neck going to snap in the middle of the night?
On the Kala bari, I use guitar strings 2-5 for its 1-4. I don't know why I do that; it's something someone told me to do on that other forum. I would think the tenor GCEA would be best with 1-4 . Right?
You'll hopefully be hearing em soon.
