SOTU 735 - The Twentieth Century

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay

Hey all. This season is going to be SOOOOOOOOOOOO easy for you to find songs for because it is "Any Song From A Decade of the 20th Century"

Here are the very simple rules.

You can do ONE song from each decade of the 20th Century, 1900 - 1909, 1910 - 1919 and so on through to 1990-1999 (Yes, I do know the 20th Century started in 1901… I'm just keeping things simple).
The song can either be written in that decade, or had a popular version in that decade. For example, "Heart and Soul" was written in the 1930's and the first popular versions were from them, but there were also popular versions in the 1950's and 1960's. You can represent any one decade with that song, but please, make it clear which decade you are representing.
Originals are welcome if they are a nostalgic look back at any of those decades. For example, I will be posting one that is a look back at growing up in the 60's.
You may post one song for each decade (you don't HAVE to, but you may) plus one original, for a max total of 11
All the other usual season rules are in effect. Don't post until Sunday March 15 in Hawaii. It should be very easy to get some 2fers.

So, everyone has LOADS of songs to choose from. If there is a song you've been longing to do but the right Season hasn't come up yet, if that song is from the 20th Century, now would be a great time to do it.

But please, I am planning to chart the entries out on a spreadsheet to keep track (not as extensive of tracking as potmo, but you get the idea) so it would really help if you make it clear which decade the entry is for.

Quickie Sunday twofer - V + '80s

"Vacation" by The Go-Go's

I discovered this is one of those songs I think I know but in fact I only sort of know the chorus.

AlanDP

"Bedelia" from the first decade in 1903. A real person, Chauncey Olcott, is mentioned in the chorus. Olcott was a famous Irish-American tenor who was also a songwriter and actor. Among many others, he was famous for recording "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling," "My Wild Irish Rose," and "Molly O." The "Molly O" mentioned in the chorus may have also been a reference to his wife, Margaret O'Donovan, since Molly is a nickname for Margaret.

CanadaJim

AlanDP I thought Molly was a nickname for 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (ecstasy)

UkeCan1 love me some GoGo-s! Go Go see them if they come through, still as great as they ever were.

Monday twofer: V + Vegas + '60s

"Viva Las Vegas" by Elvis Presley

I do not endorse any of the activities mentioned in this song … except the first word in the title. I endorse living. Viva!

AlanDP

Decade: the 1910s. "I'll Say She Does" from 1918.

Hey, Lemon!

Thanks for hosting. The 1990s is the first stop for me. 1991, to be precise. One of my all time favourite songs by one of my all time favourite bands from their classic Bandwagonesque album.

Bobby 2 on backing vocals and tenor uke.

Up the Fannies!

I'm taking some time off from work so I thought I'd try to do a song for every decade. I usually don't have time to do that many songs. Anyway, here's a song from the 1930s. See if it sounds familiar before I make the reveal at the end of the video. The intro won't be the familiar part--wait for the chorus.

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay This is a fun one ! I am especially happy because of all the songs i worked on that i either got chcken to post or they just sucked that bad. Here is a question though: Say you've done 1920 and 1940. Now you come across an amazing 1940 tune. The 1940 song can slide into the 1930 slot but you already declared it as 1940. Are there mulligans?
Give us an inch we want a mile

for those of you who arent on speaking terms with AI, I stumbled on a gold mine site I thought I would share https://davesmusicdatabase.blogspot.com/2014/07/top-100-songs-from-1910-1919.html I was so excited to share that I didnt check to see if he has one for each decade or not, but a good one for thinking by the decade, if you are like me and are completely clueless about times thing were recorded. Hell, I didnt know they even recorded shit in 1909

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay

potmo Come on… that would be a nightmare for me to keep track of. No mulligans, initial declaration is in cement 🙂

Wonderful start of the season.

Wendy started us off with a song that would Go-Go on to be an earworm for me for the next 24 hours and added an Elvis classic

Alan jumped in full steam and so far has brought us three great tunes from the early part of the century,

And Bobby (and Bobby2) brought a 90's song that I wasn't acquainted with, but I fell in love with it.

Playlist should be up to date, and is a great listen. Bring 'em on, guys!

Thanks for hosting Nearsighted. I won’t be able to post anymore that one song this week so, inspired by watching the Paul McCartney: Man on the Run film last night, ( highly recommended) and because this is the decade when I first really started to get into music, I’ve gone for the 70s, with a quick rough n ready cover of my favourite song, Let Me Roll It, off 1973’s brilliant Band On The Run LP.

AlanDP

From the 1920s. "Clementine (From New Orleans)" from 1927.

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay

Here is my original for the season, a tale of growing up in the 1960's… Dangerous Days.

Hi Lemon. Here's one from 1961. Not a song that would ever be picked to represent the sixties. When I was about 15 I was gifted a bunch a of records by a relative who was joining the priesthood and eschewing all things material.. They included a whole lot Rolling Stone Decca singles. But my favourite was a Frankie Laine LP " Hell Bent for Leather' An album of Wild West ballads. It's probably the best of it's genre. Even surpassing Marty Robbins' " Gunfighter Ballads". Here's " Bowie Knife".

734 WRAP posted.

A 1940s song. I read that Phil Silvers originally wrote it was "Bessie with the laughing face" because that was his wife's name, but the publishers changed it to "Nancy" to sell it to Frank Sinatra.
