SOTU 736 - Bootleg Whisky, Champagne and Wine

UkeCan1

Season 87 was my fourth Season (I started at 84, on day 29 of playing uke), and the theme then was also drinking.

I had a duo, Uke Can 2!, with FiL, who introduced me to the Seasons. We would work all week on a song and then meet in his office on Sunday to record.

The day before, a Saturday in October, we were at an outdoor festival, where I discovered my favorite local New Jersey band, A Halo Called Fred. I loved every single one of their nerdy punk rock songs. One that especially captivated me, "Drinking for Science", fit the theme. We asked the band for chords, made a chart, and recorded the song the next day.

I had been playing ukulele for about 8 weeks.

A long time later, Halo made their own video of the song, and featured clips from our video in theirs.

It's been a dozen years and nearly 650 Seasons since that first one, so here's me and the cockatoos in my backyard having another go.

Thanks for hosting Dr M!

I am getting to grips with a new laptop, and this is the first video recorded with it. The black stripe down the right hand side is on the "to be fixed" list. Anyway, here's one which was a hit for Sailor in 1975.

The reference in the name of the Season inspired me to break out this old favorite…

You wait ages for a song from Yorkshire then two come at once! Anyway, thanks for hosting good Doctor. Here’s an original I woke up and wrote yesterday, then recorded just now. I’ve had occasion to drink alcohol free beer twice in as many days over the weekend, because on the first occasion I was driving, and on the second, the pint of “proper” beer I had first wasn’t that nice to be honest, so I had another alcohol free one…I didn’t need to, I wasn’t driving that night, I just fancied another zero one. It got me to thinking about how awful low or zero beer used to be…remember Barbican? Foul stuff. Todays brewers have certainly upped their game with driver friendly beers. At the same time I’m conflicted because I think, what is the point of drinking beer unless it does to you what beer is supposed to? It’s not something I worry about that much though. So here’s a not particularly serious song that I called “Alcohol Free Beer” with lyrics below the vid.

Alcohol Free Beer.

There’s lots of options to omit for the modern chap

Should I give up this should I give up that?

Should I barely eat til I’m just about skeletal?

Should I give up wearing shoes even though I know my feet’ll

Get covered in blisters and suppurating sores

There’s so much to think of, too much to ignore.

It’s not easy these days

To determine is it neither or neither.

And your blood runs cold

When it’s your turn to be the designated driver.

Should I drink

Alcohol free beer

Eat sugar free cake

Drive a petrol free car

Into a bottomless lake.

Should I read paperless books

With my beauty free wife

Buy music free records

Curse my laughter free life

Should I drink

Alcohol free beer

From a cup that’s plastic free

Watch human free programmes

On my wireless TV

Should I cut myself shaving

With a metal free knife

Then drink alcohol free beer

And curse my laughter free life.

An old bluegrass song made famous (well, relatively famous) by The Dillards.
DOOLEY - Rodney Dillard & Mitch Jayne

There are lots and lots of old songs about beer, many about specific brands, many about Germans and their love for beer, and it seems almost all of them are in 3/4 time. This one is in 3/4 time and is about Germans and their love for beer, especially this specific brand, from 1910.

Threebird

Put one more in the whiskey column - a soft, easy cover of 'Whiskey Girl' by Gillian Welch.

BigKingVelour

Well, I had to do this one because that rascal Jim Yates essentially dared me to. Love this song, and it is sure enough whiskey soaked through and through. Hope you like it.

"They Ain't Making Jews Like Jesus Anymore" Kinky Friedman and The Texas Jewboys

As I say in the yt post, i also meant to alter the lyrics from "...redneck nerd in a bowling shirt" to "... with a MAGA hat, but I have the other lyric so ingrained in my brain that I just kept forgetting. Must move on 732 songs to go.

Champagne (Killer Queen Moet & Shandon)
Gin
vodka
beer
wine
whiskey (scotch and bourbon?)
rum
You can probably tell from the title that this song may be offensive, so if you are inclined to get hurt by words or think that exposing racists idiots is a bad thing, then you probably don't want to listen. There are a lot of other good reasons not to listen too, including my usual less than professional level of performance.

UkeCan1

Plenty of great songs about drinking in musicals, and you know how I love me some musicals.

This one’s from “Oliver!” - the musical based on Dickens’ “Oliver Twist”.

“Oom Pah Pah”, sung by barmaid Nancy in a bar to bar patrons about bar people.

CanadaJim

BigKingVelour Super job on One For My Baby Rick, but you have the comments turned off.

BigKingVelour

CanadaJim - Thanks Jim. I did not know that marking a video safe for kids turned off comments, but I fixed it now.

Barbablanca

Here is my second and possibly my last for this Season (Easter trip coming up!). I guess this one is an anti-alcohol one. But it does mention "getting dry" - so that's my justification for entering it here.

The background to the song is in the description section on YouTube.

AlanDP

Another old song about beer from 1903. "Under the Anheuser Bush." I made a commentary video about this song a few years ago; link is below the song. ETA: I forgot to say how I made this. I wrote out a bass part with MuseScore based on the piano score and had my computer play it with the midi "tuba" sound. The beginning intro part was 3 parts overdubbed using the Roland AE-01 with the app's "brass" sound. The little bit in the chorus that I played with the Roland was using the "trumpet" sound the first time and the "trombone" sound the second time.

"Dear God" – XTC

...I don't mean a big reduction in the price of beer"

More heresy and another beer. Heresy and beer has always been a great combination!

Champagne (Killer Queen Moet & Shandon)
Gin
vodka
beer x2
wine
whiskey (scotch and bourbon?)
rum

"Tequila", by the Champs, for cancert ukulele with whistling, overdubs of voice and Ashbory Ubass.

When I lived in California, tequila was my drink of choice in the summer months.

Thanks for hosting, Paul!

Thanks for hosting, Doc! :-)

Written by Neil Diamond in 1967, this was originally a track on one of his early albums. British reggae group, UB40, covered it in 1983 and released it as a single - it was hugely popular, and reached number 1 in the UK charts.

Baritone uke, a rare appearance from my concert uke too, various synth additions, homemade drum track and harmony vocals. I really enjoyed arranging and playing this one.

Red Red Wine - UB40 cover (SOTU 736)

A song about beer from 1884. It may have originally been in German. The sheet music has both German and English lyrics, anyway. In 4/4 this time. The 4-part harmony in the chorus is written in the original.
