Oh, dearie me! I'm a bit horrified to discover that yesterday's song choice and flag uke anecdote may have given my dear friend @potmo the impression I'm some kind of flag-waving nation booster.
You may have missed, dear David, that I'm way ahead of you in the escaping overseas game, an extremely complex and challenging move for which I'm thankful every day, having seen the writing on the wall over five years ago.
I had mixed feelings about doing yon patriotic Sousa march yesterday, but convinced myself I could own it along with the many good things about my country of origin despite her obvious failings, and a hope that we the people will yet right the ship and reclaim the freedom part of the project.
I sang the words through that lens, and many of the phrases choked me up a bit, for undoubtedly different reasons than may have been intended by the original author(s).
Besides, surely we must all agree we should be kind to our web-footed friends!
I had equally mixed feelings 13 years ago about purchasing that short-lived flag-painted uke, but it was the least expensive seemingly decent uke (though it turned out not to be) on sale on that, my very first morning of uke playing, when I couldn’t be sure how long my newly minted obsession might last. I made a similar justification then, that I would wear it like a hippie wears torn flag sewn on his jeans. Anyway, I was a bit relieved to find it was a piece of crap and to be able to return it and buy a much better and less controversial uke!
With that, I hope you like today’s “keep” + “free” twofer better:

PS, of course I still love you.
And I agree with most of what you said, aside from the part where you mischaracterized my views. I thought about saying more to explain my weird choice when I posted, but I was already up way past when I should have gone to bed. I should be wary of posting in haste!
