[…] includes a direct reference to controversial British politician Enoch Powell, whose speech in Birmingham on April 20, 1968 became hugely controversial after his assertion that mass immigration would lead to race wars and "rivers of blood." The lyric, "is th[e] music calling for a river of blood?" is a direct reference to that.
The Clash knew back in 1980, like good-hearted people know even better today, that history teaches again and again that immigration only makes western countries - from Powell's 1960s UK to the 2020s Europe and USA - better places to live and to work, enriched both economically and culturally by our immigrant coworkers, friends, and neighbors.
