Season 764 - A Dish Best Served Cold...

bobjking

Hey, Seasonistas! Welcome to Season 764.

There's an old Klingon proverb that states, "Revenge is a dish best served cold."

This week, I'm looking for songs on the theme of vengeance, retribution, getting your own back etc. Obviously, songs explicitly on theme qualify but any passing mention in the title, lyrics, whatever qualifies. The vengeance doesn't have to be bloody, but I must say that I am partial to country songs that lean towards violent retribution!

Also valid is any song, musical piece from the soundtrack to any film that can be classed as a revenge movie (eg, the Kill Bill soundtracks are ripe for picking, but there really are loads. Google is your friend…). Please mention in your post which movie your song is from!

Of course, some of you may not have the stomach for all this cold-blooded payback but, fear not! I've got you covered…

Another dish best served cold, in my opinion, is salad. So any song that mentions a salad ingredient of any kind in title, lyric, band/artist name is also fair game!

Bonus points to anyone who finds a song which deals with bloody retribution dealt out with a stick of celery, a radish or anything similar!

Originals are positively encouraged, as are collaborations and multi-tracking. All songs newly recorded for the week, please and mention somewhere that it's Season 764. All the usual t's & c's apply! No song limit!

If I've missed anything or you have any questions, let me know. I'll add the playist as and when stuff comes rolling in and if I can remember how to do it…

I remembered! Here it is…

PLAYLIST!

See y'all tomorrow!

Have I got a song for you!

Splendid theme, Bob! Apparently this phrase appeared in the English translation of an 1846 French novel, "Memoirs of Matilda" by Eugene Sue. I was going to say that this far preceeded the Klingons, but I have just read that the first Klingon settlements can be traced back to the dawn of agriculture and animal domestication … so my hunch was obviously wrong! An erudite lot, those Klingons!

I'm in the last days of my current home, where I've been enjoying two months of fabulous garden veggies I didn't grow myself. In 4 days, I start moving into my new home, where I plan to start a garden of my own.

So this is the perfect twofer - it's all about salad veggies for Bobby, and it's an '80s song (from 1982) for Del.

"Anti-Garden Song" by Eric Kilburn (1982)

Plus you get a bit of "Garden Song" by David Mallett, of which this is a parody, and a little tour of the current garden, which I've been harvesting while the landpeople are away.

Today I learned that this song is a straight parody of "Garden Song", on the same chords and melody, and not, as I thought, a minor key parody. We always sang it in minor in my New Jersey sing-along group, and I think it ought always to have been done this way. And so I have.

A song written and recorded by Johnny Paycheck.

I thought I did not know any songs that fit this theme, and then I remembered this one, her is my take on If I had a rocketlauncher by Bruce Cockburn.

Edwin

Revenge and/or salad you say? I reckon I've got both covered here. I wrote this in early 2023, since when it's kept growing. However, since I'm not really a vengeful person I have been kind and omitted approximately 7 minutes of verses.

…and we're off! It's been a hectic day here in Wirksworth town. We've been beseiged by wizards, which seems to be yearly event…

A magnificent bunch of opening tracks, with gardening, violent retribution, rocket launchers and wishes for the gentlest type of retribution imaginable!

A lovely start! Thank you all!

UNREQUITED TO THE NTH DEGREE - Loudon Wainwright III

Bob has asked for songs about revenge and this is the first one that popped into my mind. There is a Call and response (Laugh and response) part which I'd love to have you join in on. You'll know when we get there.

Great theme Bobbo! I've just finished reading "Lonesome Dove" the Great American Western Novel. There are lots of instances of revenge, vengeance but tempered by the notional concept of justice. This song could have come straight out of that book. 'Spanish Johnny" First set to music by Paul Siebel, adapted from a poem by Willa Cather. Based on Dave Bromberg's version. Sorry for abrupt ending, wasn't intentional.

Thanks for hosting, Bobby!

Here is a video I made about a popular salad dish in Singapore.

I made some very meticulous illustrations of the ingredients, so meticulous that they have eyes and mouths. and hands and legs. Etc.. I made the art with some children poster paints that have a consistency of gravy and THAT IS THE CONSISTENCY YOU WANT FOR YOUR ROJAK DRESSING.

Then I went on Audacity and recorded some clawhammer on my gourd banjo uke and put everything together. In the video I also say the names of the ingredients in Teochew, my mother tongue, so yes this is a very educational video for children of all cultures and ages. I love salads and I love Rojak.

For violence, I added some ferocious crushing of peanuts.

…and just like that, it's a dark Monday morning. Usually the least inspiring part of the week but I've been treated to a clutch of new songs during the night. Thank you all!

I love how the two options are already throwing up a huge contrast in tone!

Here's wishing you all a good week ahead!

"Strawberry Fields" The Beatles

Thanks Bob

"9 to 5" is Dolly Parton's 1980 theme song from her 1980 movie (with Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda) of the same title. Though the song doesn't reach the revenge state, the movie sure does, in a very satisfying way … especially to anyone following with outrage the recent news from such places as Cornell.

Monday twofer, possibly my last from this particular verandah. (Or possibly not, since I'll have both places for about a week.)

Hi Bobster and thanks for hosting. As soon as I saw the theme this is the first song that came to mind, a very angry one from the pen of Justin Sullivan, ( also known during their early days as Slade The Leveller) of Bradford rockers New Model Army. This is off their debut LP from 1984, so in theory I could have done it as a twofer for both this and Del’s season….🤔. Anyway, Justin Sullivan wrote this after seeing a programme about Klaus Barbie, a very evil man let’s be honest, and how he’d evaded the Nuremberg brand of long drop justice by fleeing to Bolivia. I abridged this a little, there are other verses about big corporations dumping poison, and drug pushers preying on the vulnerable. So quite a lot to be angry about really. I saw NMA at a festival a good few years ago, and because Vengeance is pretty much the only song of theirs I know, I was hoping they would play it. They didn’t. Still, they were really good in any case. So here’s my serving of that cold dish…

SWEET REVENGE - John Prine

Hope you enjoy this one Bobby.

UkeCan1

Time to resurrect an old favorite that's perfect for this Season.

Because, you know, there are healthier options than revenge.

"Pray for You" by Jaron and the Long Road to Love

I first did it for Season 151, breakup songs, January 2015.

Today Jon told me that someone at a shop that sells a few of my self-published/printed booklets (with my original story and illustrations) kicked up a fuss about the art in the booklets being made by AI. This is not the first time someone thought the art I made were not made by me. I dunno what i was more upset about: that my art was soul-less looking to them, or that I was a con artist.

Anyway - I scribbled some words about AI just down and sat down and recorded it while Jon was sleeping. I sang and played very softly - while trying to convey a bit of my annoyance. haha.

I figured the best way to get back at this whole AI nightmare as artists and musicians is to keep making things. That is the best kind of revenge. Don't you think?

YorkSteve

I am pretty sure that our host had something like this in mind - possibly the most revenge-filled song there is.
