A Christmas song that doesn’t mention Christmas? Maybe. It’s certainly seasonal - it was released in November 1982 and made number 2 in the UK charts in January 1983, so was around and about during December. And it’s now certainly remembered and played as a Christmas song.
It wasn’t ‘cool’ when I was 16 to like David Essex or his music, but I secretly loved this song. I found out several years after her death that it was a favourite of my nan, which makes it even more special to me.
Baritone uke with some added synth bass, pads and flute, also some synth oboe played via Bluetooth with my digital wind instrument, a homemade electronic drum track, and some harmony vocals in the choruses. A labour of love.
