Season 677 - Bring Me A Letter

LimousinLil

Hello again, Ylle! This is very low-hanging fruit, but no one's done it yet and I am lacking in inspiration, and … oh, the FRUSTRATION of writing to someone who refuses to answer!!!

Hello, dear correspondents!

Thank you for your first fine letters! The Finnish Post is nowadays a real 'snail mail', but your musical letters have arrived promptly from several continents and countries. I have enjoyed listening your songs and I've updated the playlist.

P.S. Your submissions are great. 🙂

HOW'S ERNIE? - Fred J. Eaglesmith

[deleted]

thank you for hosting the season this week Ylle 🙂

this is an ol' bluegrass/fiddle tune i've loved for many years

and this morning joo and me sat down to take a run at it w/ our 2 'new to us' ukes

that we found abandoned the other day at our local tip shop. they cost us the grand total

of 5 bucks for the 2 of them! a little bit of TLC w/ the tuners and then

joo painted on them and we love them!

the song is called 'The Letter That Never Came' and i have a sneaky suspicion it might also be

on Jim's list of songs to play this week too 🙂

"I wrote my congressman a NOTE…"

*Don't Put A Tax On The Beautiful Girls, written in 1919 by *Jack Yellen and Milton Ager, is such a fun song to play!

I saw it in my song book today and recorded it again. (I have done it for previous seasons…)

HUGE thanks to Jon for filming this for me. I love what he did here! Great filming.

He started the video on our The Jumping Flea homemade pinball boardgame and ended on the Tin Pan Alley book, for this tin pan alley classic!

Thanks for hosting, Ylle!

Yesterday's song made me think of this much better song from 1985, "Love Vigilantes" by New Order.

If you're familiar with both songs, I think you'll see the connection immediately. If you're not … listen carefully to both.

With cockatoo chorus setting a … mood.

There is one letter that nobody ever wants to get: the telegram informing you of the death of a loved one. This song imagines the reception of such a missive by the poet Wilfred Owen's mother on 11th November 1918. On that day, the whole world was celebrating the end of the war, but, as the crowds cheered, she was about to learn that her son had been killed exactly a week previously in one of the last skirmishes of the war. His War Poetry would go on to become world famous and we can only speculate as to what he might have produced if he had not been killed so close to the end of the conflict.

I hope you like it

PS The version in the subtitles is the correct one. I ballsed up two lines. But I haven't time to redo the video.

He Stopped Loving Her Today - Bobby Braddock & Curly Putman

My favourite George Jones song

This has been a favourite for 50 years. " Spanish Boots of Spanish Leather" Bob Dylan. Haven't seen the new biopic but got to say from the musical clips I've seen the actor does a superb job. Imitating Dylan's early vocals probably not such a huge stretch but what is special is the acoustic guitar playing…all the nuances. great stuff.

Kev and I made a cover of Dear McCracken which details an interesting email.

Pretty sunset behind me, so I grabbed the camera for a quickie. Second take was better, but the sunset was mostly gone, so I went with the first. Feel free to watch with sound off? 😂

"Sealed With a Kiss" by Bobby Vinton and others

Hello again, dear Seasonistas! Thank you for your beautiful, fun and thought-provoking submissions. We have letters, telegrams, notes and an email. The playlist should be up to date again with 26 songs. Give them a listen, if you haven't done so already. Thank you very much!

Yours truly, host of the Season 677

P.S. Excellent songs, did I say that already?

P.P.S. - Umm, yes, that's all I think. I've just always wanted to use "P.P.S." somewhere. 😉

Hey, Ylle!

Thank you for the week! Here's a scribbled down number from the pen of the Bard of Dundee, Michael Marra. The closing (and partly title) track from his 2002 album, Posted Sober.

Thanks for hosting, Ylle. 🙂

Synth pop duo Yazoo didn’t stay together for more than a few years in the early 80s, but recorded some fabulous music in that time. This is one of the best tracks from their stunning debut album Upstairs At Eric’s. As often happens, I was planning just to record this with baritone ukulele, rhythm track and vocals, but it evolved beyond that when I decided first to add some tenor uke, then some vocal harmonies, then some synth bass and pads. The end result sounds very different from the original, but I’m really pleased with it.

I watched the film Wicked Little Letters last week, not in preparation for this Season, it was more a happy accident. Not the best or funniest film I’ve ever seen but entertaining for an hour or so in its own way, and had Olivia Coleman, Jessie Buckley, Anjana Vasan and Timothy Spall in it who were all fantastic as ever. The basic premise is of a god fearing woman in a quiet seaside town who falls out with her neighbour so starts writing a series of profanity filled letters to herself and others with the intention that everyone will believe the neighbour wrote them, which, for a while, they do. So I decided to do a little original inspired by the film, which was itself inspired by real events. I didn’t work particularly long or hard on this original, but I don’t think the makers of the film did either. Warning: contains bad words!!!

Fan Mail!

Heard this on the radio last night on my short drive home from chorus - thanks, Bay FM! I don't listen to the radio that much, but it always seems to play the perfect Seasons suggestion I would never have thought of on my own.
