Season 687: Should

Barbablanca

Here is my contribution to the week. It is an original (surprise, surprise) written for this week.

Thanks for hosting Joko! I hope I have captured the spirit of what you are looking for with this one.

DEAD SKUNK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD - Loudon Wainwright III
Sorry to take so long Joko.

My life as a music teacher began in about 1970 when a student from grade six came down to my grade 5&6 class and asked if I'd teach her how to play the guitar. It sounded like fun and the first song she wanted to learn was Dead Skunk. Kathy still comes to her brother's place for the Bear Paw Jamboree that he holds in his back yard, so we still keep in touch and she still plays guitar. I have spent some time playing mandolin in her brother's bluegrass band Sweet Grass.

Thanks for hosting, Joko! 🙂

This is a song I wrote 3 years ago, but I recorded this new version this morning. It contains a single, solitary ‘should’, which I hope is enough to qualify it for the Season.

Baritone uke with synth bass and pads, and some added vocal harmonies in the chorus.

So Hard To Say Goodbye - original song (SOTU 687)

Wonderful entries these last couple of days which have been added to the playlist and commented on YT.

It occurs to me that I haven't mentioned anything about prizes this week, and as a traditionalist Seasonista, I think we should continue that aspect of our little group. However, as no winning criteria were set, this week's winner will be determined by random over at WheelOfNames.com. Prizes to be announced.

@CanadaJim , thanks for the interesting back story to your choice. Did that come to mind after seeing Dead Skunk from the list from earlier this week? As I'd already compiled the list, it was easy enough to turn "Should's from My Songbook" into a spinner. We're a little light on the song count this week, so I invite any and all to take a spin on the Wheel Of Names - https://wheelofnames.com/rwr-gqj

When I spun, I got… you'll see. Another Taylor Swift song from back in 2008…On my charred yet loved concert Hulalu uke…

Hello, Joko, and thanks for hosting … especially under such difficult circumstances! This is the first song I thought of when I saw your theme - I think Brian hinted at it - but it took me all week to get around to it as I am currently experiencing a bit of a pet problem. The poor cats - Margot and Seamus - have spent the last three weeks or so sheltering in my bedroom to escape three visiting labradors. Now I am down to one labrador - my puppy, Merlin - who has suddenly found that he can climb stairs and spends most of his time trying to access the cats. I have (just about) succeeded in stopping him from barking at them, but things are still rather tense. Life is a little fraught! Well, yes, life IS a little fraught generally - and don't we all know it - but my particular bit is stressful just now. Anyway, herewith, a very quick (and not very good) cover of "I Should Have Known Better", which I managed to accomplish in the kitchen while Merlin was chewing on a buffalo horn - a buffalo horn?!? - which had just been delivered in the post. Now I have to find time to listen to everyone else's contributions .. sorry for being so "absent."

I completely agree that "should" and "shouldn't" are usually followed by unwelcome, often useless advice.

Though the Bee Gees got it right, at least for me, with "You Should Be Dancing."

SHOULD I? - Arthur Freed & Nacio Herb Brown

I don't think I've ever capoed the uke at the 4th fret before, but I had to this time.

Whoever is scheduled for Week 689 should surely consider a theme starting with "Sh", as week 688 - Shirley - has been posted. That said, I'm gonna post a reminder we've got roughly seven hours before midnight in Hawaii in this week.

Here's a last-second twofer … if my internet holds out….

I was today years old when I discovered Kiefer Sutherland has a country singing career. And quite a lovely voice at that.

This sad song is called "Shirley Jean", and contains several prominent "shoulds".

Kiefer's mother was Shirley Jean … did she receive such a letter, I wonder?

(I bet you didn't have this one on your awesome spinnerator!)
