Season 696 - Give That Uke A Break!

Edwin's @Edwin original is so catchy and fun! It really makes me smile so much! Some delightful little surprises in the way he performed the song. It is just brilliant and funny and fun and happy. Thanks so much, Edwin! OH, I love the tee you are wearing too! I need one to wear to open mics! Or just go to crowded places.

So stoked that Robert has recorded something for the Seasons! I don't think he as an account here (you can register, Robert!) so I have posted his 2 lovely versions of Bad To Me on his behalf. I have always loved the way Robert sings and I have missed watching/listening to him on the Seasons. This has made me really happy. Thanks Robert!!!

Although I did nothing except sit and listen to Del's @DelGriff stunning acapella version of All I Have To Do Is Dream, it felt supremely satisfying, as if I have just had a spa or massage or something. It was so soothing to listen to. Outstanding! Thanks so much Del!!!

WOW. Chris's cover of Lean On Me made me tear up a little! @hands_on_lanzon It also. er, made me laugh a little! Fantastic, heartfelt cover! Standing ovation here. Thanks so much, Chris!!! You didn't post it here, so I posted on your behalf!

Really nice to meet you, and hear you sing and play the uke!

When I saw your entry, I immediately felt like I have seen you online somewhere. I was going to comment on your smart and cool outfit when I watched your video, but I didn't as I didn't want to frighten new seasonistas away by talking about wardrobe on their debut, just in case! LOL.

Your voice has a joy, an open-hearted quality that was in Randy's voice too. You both are quite different, but that joy is there. Isn't the uke such a great instrument?! I am so happy that you have found us! Looking forward to more posts from you!

joo

I dunno how to Private message so I will say here, I forgot to mention it last night -

Jim @CanadaJim , can I help with the uploading/video issue you experienced with the collab with Charldene and Scott? I am looking forward to seeing that!

johnpoole

Not an entry but pretty funny acapella parodying The Wellerman sea shanty which Dr Mitch did up the page.

From the Trailer Park Boys..long running mildly amusing Canadian TV show. One of the main characters loves kitties. This sea shanty is called “ The Kittyman”. I have no evidence that Jim was ever in the Trailer Park Boys….but who knows!

I was never in the Trailer Park Boys, but I was a fan.
My son Darcy's band Flash Lighnin' performed and hung out with these guys. Darcy is second from right.

Thanks for hosting Joo - I wish I had more time to listen & join in this week, but I am just back from holiday, and about to set off again, working at the Glastonbury festival.

Anyway, if you take away the ukulele, all that's left is Words.

joo

Meow my furry cats meow~~~~~

LOL. that was fun! The guy taking a sip from whatever he is drinking stole the show for me. Hilarious. Thanks for sharing, John!

And great photo of Darcy with his band and the Trailer Park Boys. Thanks, Jim!

Steve @YorkSteve shared a really heartfelt cover of Words, with the acapella part suitably and brilliantly done. Very lovely. Thanks so much Steve!

I got your video with Chardene ready to email to you, Jim! @CanadaJim it is on its way now….

dr_mitch

Plenty of breaks from the uke in this song where it's just me singing, albeit just phrases…

16 tons - one I've played lots, but I don't think I've played it for the Seasons for a while.

let's try this again. a shot at cripple creek

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay How wonderful to see you here! Randy was a sweetheart and brought a lot of joy to The Seasons. I do hope you will continue to join in with us!

LimousinLil

[deleted] How great to see you back, Jon … brill playing on a lovely uke!

The vocal neck capo mentioned in Dodgypedia works!

I am singing an acapella rendition of Jim's Creaky Chair. Words by Jim @CanadaJim, acapella by me.

Words:

It's not extremely comfy, but it has no arms to scratch guitars and it has a nice creaky sound that adds some cool, or sometimes not so cool, percussion to my playing. It's also right in front of my laptop, which sits on a desk, not my lap.

Lol!! Hey, I’ll have to give that a try for those higher range songs!! 😀👌

Haha.. so funny you two..😊 Still hoping to get something in for your season, Joo! I just gotta pick one and do it! (Especially now that it’s the weekend and I can relax a bit.)💞

Threebird

Great theme and thanks for hosting this season, Joo!

'A Night Like This' by LP is the first song I learned to play on ukulele. I borrowed a uke and started learning to play it by getting straight into this tune via the tutorial (featuring LP) linked in the YT description. It is also very first song I played for SOTU, back in Season 621. The required a cappella element is at the start.

CanadaJim

This one has given me an enormous amount of trouble loading. Thanks to Scott, Joo and my brother Gary for attempting to get this put on YouTube. This one has just come out as a "Shot" so Charldene is the only one visible.
Scott and Chaldene dropped in for a wonderful visit on their way to Ottawa, and we decided to record a tune. We realised that there was a 2 bar a cappella section, making it eligible for Joo's Season.

Charldene had a really cool little Kala travel uke that she let me try. Do I need another uke? Hmmmm?

**********************************************************************************************************************

Since Joo has posted a full screen video that include all three of us, I have taken down the video that my brother sent me, but here's a photo that was taken by a waitress in front of our local pub that includes all four of us.

Paul @dr_mitch brought 16 tons of fun, while his fingers danced on the fretboard of his awesome blue resonator uke! That uke is indeed a beast! An excellent choice of song for acapella this week, Paul. Thank you!!!

( i got a feeling no one looks or reads these comments I typed here…they are not the same as the ones I typed in YT. Hm.. Neva mind! Like I told Jon yesterday, i also got a feeling that every time when I host, I am the one having the most fun. I hope that you guys are enjoying this Season!)

Jon @[deleted] , the very talented and funny other half of The Two Little Woodpeckers duo, AKA Eugene, showed us some awesome playing with his version of Cripple Creek. I love the side lighting in the video, love the garage venue. Thanks so much, Jona!!! PS. the acapella moments are brief and why not!?

Joo tried out the much-discussed vocal neck capo seen in Dodgypedia, first stumbled upon by John. @johnpoole I think it worked fabulously, that is, if you have a fabulous voice to begin with. I dunno why many called it cheating. I mean, if people can use voice-enhancement effects or reverb, what's wrong with a little scarfy neck lift? Thanks to Jon too for helping with the capo!

WOW. Threebird @Threebird brought an absolutely stunning version of A Night Like This. I love the way he sang the acapella as he walked up the stairs …it was such a lovely performance! Check it out if you haven't! Thanks so much, Threebird!!!

Charldene, Jim and Maggie did a wonderful medley of 2 songs, Five Foot Two, Eyes of Blue and Please Don't Talk About Me When I AM Gone. The arrangement was soooo good! The different picking and strumming, different range of voices, and the thing they did with singing one song WHILE the other one is sung (what do you call that?) is AWESOME!!!! Thanks so much, Maggie, Charldene and Jim! (and thanks to Scott for filming!)

It always makes me happy seeing Seasonistas play together in person. I am hoping I can visit Jim and Maggie one day, with Jon!

Jim @CanadaJim , I was asleep last night and did not check in with you if you had managed to upload the video on YT. Since you still can't do it, and since Gary has uploaded a version that is cropped, I have uploaded it on my channel! I have linked you and Charldene!!!

The version of the video that is not cropped is here!

There will be prizes!!!

Sunday twofer:

"One" by Nilsson (though mine follows the better known Three Dog Night cover version, and he's better known by his full name Harry Nilsson) almost meets all 4 Season 697 sub-themes:

1) Single-name artist (written by Nilsson)

2) Single-word title

3) "One" in the title

4) Video less than 1:11 (I got close)

Plus I stuck in a brief a capella bit for 696.

Threebird

Here is one more for the season, Joo! I'm working out a ukulele version of 'Pretty Boy Floyd' by Woody Guthrie, but it is not quite there yet. However, by a tucking a little a cappella part in the middle of it I can present a version that is suitable for the theme this week…

CanadaJim

I was searching for some one word titles on YouTube, without much luck, but I did find this one that I can fit into Joo's Season while there's still time.

Steve Goodman and John Prine wrote this song called "The Twentieth Century Is Almost Over". They wrote it back before the turn of the century, so I've changed it to "The Twentieth Century Is All Over".

Thanks for a great week Joo!
