Week 700! Chosen By Chosic

Joko

Well, howdy there Seasonistas, welcome to the big Seven Oh Oh!

What's your favorite song?

I know that is a complicated question for anyone over the age of 9. I myself would have a hard time pinning it down to a single tune. To my memory, we have never had a "do your favorite song" week here in the 13.44 years we've been at this.

This is not going to be that week.

BY favorite song, I mean a playable song. I'm assuming you already know how to play your favorite song. Not much learning opportunity there. Instead, I'd like to you choose a song from a list of ones that are similar to your favorite song (to play). That list is available for free at https://chosic.com

See the video introduction for an example….

Standard rules apply regarding starting and ending times (we started 10 minutes ago!), which means there are still 23 hours left to get your Banned by the BBC week 699! No restrictions on whatever electrickery floats your boat.

Original songs welcome! Perhaps a song about your favorite song? Or for a real challege, scroll down on the Chosic homepage to "random genre generator" and write an original song in the genre it chooses for you. CHoose from popular genre or ALL genre

Let me see what it picks for me… Urbano Latino… I don't know this…. oh and it comes with examples. My SPanish is lacking methinks… lets try again with popular genre… aha… Reggae!

First prize this week wins their very own pony in honor of the late Duke of Uke.

I put in the title of one of my favourites and got a whole pile of cool songs. Do I have to choose one, or can I do a bunch of songs generated by one favourite?
Must the new song be a brand new one that we've never played before, or can we redo one that we've done in the past?

Thanks for hosting Joko, fun theme. I typed in one of my favourite songs to play, God Only Knows by the Beach Boys, and this one came up as suitable for the playlist. I remember Rob saying that everyone should play this song at least once in their lifetime.

Hallelujah by Leonard Cohen and others, my first time but I may do it again in the future.

And Whiskey In The Jar by Thin Lizzy

dr_mitch

Thanks Joko. I put in one of my favourites - Something by the Beatles - and at the top of the list was Killing Me Softly with His Song, so here it is!

Apologies for the lack of hat.

dr_mitch

Okay - I can't resist immediately posting a second one. Apologies if that's not okay. This time, Space Oddity by David Bowie.

Joko woah- this is going to be a great new music finder! It is generating stuff I should have heard. Thanks for the introduction!

Barbablanca

What a fun idea. Never heard of Chosic.

They have some bizarre criteria I can't figure out for their suggestions though. Anyone hazard a guess why Dylan's "Like a Rolling Stone" - one of my all time favourites, should generate the suggestion "These Boots were Made for Walking" by Nancy Sinatra? 😜

I may try one of the other options Joko mentioned 😎

Bystander

Barbablanca I think the boots were probably made of Spanish leather.

johnpoole

Barbablanca Snap Berni..I also did "Like a Rolling Stone"…yea plenty of off beat choices. One I did like and can see some synergy with Like a Rolling Stone was Warren Zevon's Poor Poor Pitiful me. I might give that a crack.

Joko

CanadaJim You can do whatever you like, but in the spirit of learning, at least start with one you've never played before. Fair enough?

Joko

Barbablanca They're both from the 1960's and I guess if we hark back to the "gathers no moss" origin of that phrase, boots that are walking similarly would gather no moss?

Joko

Time to listen to our first day's offerings!
Had to join the fun first.
As I noted in the intro video, I used Turn the Page for my favorite and had a great time listening to the selections it chose. Settled on this tune from Pure Prarie League, 1972

Thanks Joko! A fun creative theme. I did " Like a Rolling Stone". The one I thought it came up with that was a good match was Warren Zevon's " Poor Poor Pitiful Me". It has acerbic humour and driving rhythm just like Dylan's song.

Interestingly I was trying to reply to a comment from Charldene on the above song. YouTube wouldn’t accept my reply. I tried on a couple of different browsers. I finally worked out it must have been cause I was using the term “ gender reversal” when comparing Warren Zevon’s lyrics to Linda Ronstadt’s. When I didn’t use that term comment reply worked. Sensitive algorithm🙂

johnpoole Blimey, it's coming to something if even computers take umbrage.

I entered "Singing the Blues" that I recorded a few weeks ago and this song was on the list. Complete with an unnecessary amount of reverb and "Bom-Bom-Boms," as recorded by Don Gibson.

johnpoole

I have a soft spot for sad poignant country songs by the likes of John Prine, Townes Van Zandt, Guy Clarke etc. I used John Prine's " Hello in There" as my pick.

Something came up by a Texas songwriter I didn't know . Terry Allen. Called " Death of the Last Stripper". It didn't disappoint. On baritone with acoustic slide guitar in open C for added sadness.

Hello, Joko .. and thanks for hosting! I went for "Different Drum", which has always been a favourite of mine, and Chosic came up with the suggestion, amongst many others, of "Lazy Day" by "Spanky and Our Gang." I'm not quite sure what the similarities are, apart from the fact that they were both recorded in 1967. It's a nice, uplifting song though, and I hadn't done it before, so, herewith …. (P.S. I took the photos in the garden this morning … it's a lovely, sunny day; just like the song.)

"Cissy Strut", by the Meters, for concert ukulele, with overdubs of Ashbory Ubass and whistling. I've been messing around with "Tighten Up" by Archie Bell and the Drells… this is what Chosic came up with!

Thanks for hosting, Joko!
