SOTU 702: Horses and Ponies

MsBean

Welcome to Season 702.

The title speaks for itself: I hope you can bring me a song that mention horses or ponies. This can be part of the lyrics, the song title, the name of the artist/group. I am not looking for songs about cowboys, but if you have a horsey song that mentions them, they're welcome too.

As per usual, if you're a new Seasonistas, jump on board and bring any song you like or what you're working on.

Other rules as usual (see the Seasons of the Ukulele FAQ if you don't know what that means)

New videos only please (with the usual exemptions), posted on YouTube so that they can be added to the playlist, and please say either in the video or description that it's for Seasons of the Ukulele 702 Horses and Ponies. It'd also be really nice to put a link to this post so that people who stumble on your video on youtube know what we're up to.

Please, do not post more than 8 videos. The end of the week is just as good as the beginning, if you ask me. However, if spreading your entries out doesn't work for you, then post them when and as you can.

If you are fortunate to have an open mic locally, and you put together a set with several songs that fit this theme, I'll happily listen to your set. The songs from your open mic video will count as separate songs since I don't have as much spare time as I had last year.

Originals, multitracking and collaborations welcome. I always enjoy having several versions of a song. Nobody 'beats' you to a song, for only you can do 'you'.

I would like to ask that you include the songwriters or performers in your post if you do not want to include the information in the YouTube description. Every week I hear a lot of new music on the Seasons, and it's nice to know the name of the song, band and composers if I want to check out other versions.

Don't forget to listen to and comment on other songs too! It's very inspiring to hear and see the different playing styles and techniques. Let people know how awesome they are!

Don't fogret that Ylle's season is still in full swing too. So it may be in Equuleus or Pegasus to revisit the My Little Pony show.

You can post any time from 00:00:00 Sunday 27 July, Hawaiian time, right up to 23:59:59 on Sunday 3 August Hawaiian time.

The PLAYLIST is here with a placeholder/inspirational/rickr… opener.

Season 701 reaching out to 702.

johnpoole I had such a crush on Connie Hines

This song is all about the ghostly cows and the riders doomed to chase them forever, but it also mentions their horses.

And it was performed on The Muppet Show, with some glorious Muppet trumpet and a whole host of Muppet musicians and actors accompanying Johnny Cash ... so it's a twofer.

Hello, Sabine … and thanks for hosting! This song comes from a 1996 edition of "Father Ted", when the monks come up with an entry for the "Eurosong" competition.

While I'm not a fan of Country music, I do enjoy Western music. Here is a song that Tex Ritter recorded in 1945 (written by Everett Cheetham). Tex's version is slow, mournful, almost crying. I do it a bit more "upbeat" Blood on the Saddle.

Hi Sabine. Admittedly this is a cowboy song albeit of the Rhinestone variety. But horses are mentioned. I never really liked Glen Campbell's hit. Overproduced and a bit cheesy to my ear. But I suspected the actual song was elementally good. So here it is lower and slower. Rhinestone Cowboy written by Larry Weiss.

IF I HAD A BOAT - Lyle Lovette

Thanks for being our host this week Sabine. When I told Maggie our topic, she made a couple of suggestions and this old Lyle Lovette song was one of 'em.

I'm not sure that a boat is the best place to be ridin' a pony Lyle.

I had to include this one here. I wrote this a while back, and it features horses in the chorus. I wrote this as a parody of country songs, because they all seemed the same to me and only covered a few topics, so I thought I'd put all those topics into one song… The Cowboy Song.

Yesterday I posted "My Pony Boy." I couldn't find a "pony girl" by I found "Pony Maid." From 1909, the same year, but not by the same songwriters. The "western" women on these cover arts always seem to be wearing a kind of Smokey Bear hat.

COWPOKE - Gene Autry
Gene Autry was one of my boyhood heroes,. I had this song on a record since about 1950, but it seems to have disappeared. I used to bounce my kids on my knees and sing them this song.
Not a real cowboy hat, but it'll have to do.

Thanks for hosting Sabine. This is one of the first songs that popped into my head when I read your opening post on the thread. Hope you're doing well ~

YorkSteve

Thanks for hosting this week Sabine. Last week I did "White Horses", so I had to dig a bit deeper, and came up with this, a hit in 1984 for The Icicle Works.

LimousinLil

Hello again, Sabine! I think this was the first song I thought of for the week, but it seemed a bit old-hat; then I found an updated version written in 1942, so I joined them together …

**I HAD A HORSE AND HIS NAME WAS BILL - p.d.

Here's a nomination for the silliest song this season Sabine.**

UkeFoote

"Crazy Horses" by the Osmonds, for concert ukulele with singing. Overdubs of Ashbory Ubass, secondary vocal, and malfunctioning Casio Digital Horn DH-100 - the "inferior" model ; )

Thanks for hosting, Sabine!

"Juokse sinä humma" (Run Little Horse) was written and recorded by Finnish singer and sportsman Tapio Rautavaara in 1953. It is based on traditional / folk songs. My granny used to sing it to me, when I was a kid.

I'm having way too much fun with this season. Here is a pony song from my favorite western, Rio Bravo. In the movie, this was sung by two of my favorite singers, Dean Martin and Ricky Nelson (with Walter Brennen pretending to play the harmonica) My Rifle, My Pony and Me

We're about halfway through the Season and I've heard many superb entries already.

Steve mentioned he had brought a suitable song last week and he had to think a bit to find a different one. So I thought of the following, since it could help him out if he were to have time to submit more music.

If you are struggling to find a song to bring and you are lucky enough to have a Black Horse inn/pub/tavern/etc* near you, I am also happy to welcome any other cowboy songs that do not mention the horse, pinto, colt, mustang and so on. But your video should then have the name of the pub visible (or upload it as a thumbnail if you don't usually appear in the video).

Thanks to all of you who have already posted songs. Keep them coming!

*This could be a different equine alternative such as The Prancing Pony as well, if you're near Bree…
