Dire Straits' "Brothers in Arms" album, a continuous-loop cassette player, and chocolatey-covered raisins from the vending machine got me through the long nights alone writing my thesis in an empty university office computer room. I heard this song last night at the Greens dinner in the park, and was instantly brought back to that time.
"Why Worry?" by Dire Straits
(As an interesting side note, this was UC Berkeley, in the room directly above the one struck by the Unabomber only months before, which destroyed the military pilot career of my classmate, who lost part of his sight and a finger or two when he opened the package bomb sent by the infamous bomber. I was up the block having lunch at Top Dog, or I'd have been in my office above when it happened. As I walked back from lunch, and multiple emergency vehicles flew by us in the same direction, sirens blaring, I made some dumb joke to my friend about "Are they bombing Cory Hall now?", only to discover minutes later, that Cory Hall indeed had been bombed! That whole section of building was blocked by caution tape and officers, and I had to retrieve my backpack the following day. The bomb had blown a huge hole in a desk, but thankfully spared the life of my colleague.)
