Season 723 - A Very Hairy Christmas

Hello everybody, and welcome to Season 723 - A Very Hairy Christmas.

The main challenge this week is for you to play and sing songs with lyrics that contain words with any kind of connection to hair, including the word itself. This could include hair styles, colours, hairy parts of the body (eg eyebrows, eyelashes, beards etc), items used to style, shape, remove hair (eg brushes, combs, scissors, razors etc) - I’m sure you get the idea.

There is also a secondary challenge this week: during the 24 hours of the 25th December wherever you are in the world, you may record and post any song of your choice - that’s my Christmas gift to you all.

There is no song limit this week.

One, and only one, of your entries can be a re-post of an entry from a past Season that fits the hairy theme.

All the usual rules apply - see Edwin’s marvellous FAQ here if you’re unaware of the details.
Original songs are particularly welcome.
Multitracking and collaborations are also very welcome.

Don’t post until it’s Sunday 21st December in Hawaii, and don’t post after it‘s Sunday 28th December in Hawaii.

Instead of giving a prize, I will make a donation of £1 for every entry to the Season to a charity I will choose later in the week. I will, however, select and announce my three favourite entries at the end of the week, just for the fun of it.

Locks of Love is real though, and is perfect for this theme. People grow their hair long and then cut it and donate it for wigs for people undergoing chemotherapy. I have a friend who does this every few years. I presume they have something similar in the UK, and that they need money as well as hair.

For twofer fodder, I wondered if there were any songs about a hippie Santa. Many, it turns out. This one looked fun, and it was. It mentions multiple items of hair and fur.

Hello, Del and thanks for hosting .. and for those wonderful floaty balls!!! There are endless possibilities to your theme, but, unfortunately I am running out of time getting ready for Christmas, when I will be entertaining three labradors, two cats and, oh, yes … people!!! Anyway, I was amazed to find that there was an Australian Band called "The Beards", who wrote beard-themed songs. This song is about a bearded gent who justifies his anti-social behaviour by citing his total antipathy towards beardless people. WISHING EVERYONE HERE A VERY HAPPY CHRISTMAS AND LET US HOPE FOR A BETTER YEAR TO COME (I'm not sure that I can cope with much more of what's going on at the moment!)

I think this is my first 2fer. This is one of my favorite Christmas songs, and it just happens to mention "hair". Written by Michael McKean and David L. Lander, it was performed by them in the first appearance of Lenny and the Squigtones on the Laverne & Shirley TV show. The Jolliest Fat Man.

"A babe with the moon and the stars in his hair…" I recorded "Tread Softly to the Stable" by Lesley Fowkes and then realised that it is a twofer for Seasons 722 and 723.

Oh, I have a song that has lots of hair in it! The song is named after a Roller Derby girl named Dizzy Crimson, the crimson refers to her hair colour and the dizzy is probably from skating in circles endlessly. It also mentions staring at her hairy legs, and her flipping her hair.

Thanks for hosting and providing a loophole to post this again! I am using the single use exemption to post the version I submitted for my 3rd Season - #623. The following is what I posted to introduce the song in 623…

"Dizzy" is the story of how I met my spouse 17 years ago after seeing her on the bus a few times over a couple of months, learning a bit each time, like peeling back the layers of an onion. I saw her on a packed bus and was smitten at first glance, she was just a pretty face at that point but something felt different. The second time I saw her on the bus, she was carrying roller-skates and talking to the driver about her roller derby league, I was more intrigued. The third time, she plunked herself down in the back row leaving one empty seat between us. Then she pulled out the book "The Golden Spruce", about a very specific tree that I was familiar with, and I knew I had to say something! But alas, before I could get up the nerve, someone sat between us. However, as I watched her exit the bus, she threw a look back at me. I went home, put up a Missed Connection ad on Craigslist, and surprisingly, she replied a few days later after she heard from several other derby girls about the ad.

I guess I have rambled through enough of the story that I don't need to post the song, but here it is anyways. The lyrics are posted in the YouTube video description. [A bit of roller derby lingo that will help it make more sense: her derby name was Dizzy Crimson, some common expressions and terminology - "talk derby to me, baby", "skate fast, turn left" (pretty much sums up most of the action in roller derby), "flat-track" is a different style than the banked track you may have seen on TV in the 70's, "quads" are the traditional 4-wheel skates (no in-line skates).]

A song from 1923. Van & Schenck were vaudeville stars who eventually became radio, recording, and Broadway stars with their musical comedy act. Henry Lodge was a composer who wrote music for songs as well as some instrumental ragtime pieces for both piano and banjo.

Also, I'm pleased that I cut off all my hair before I found out this Season's theme, so good to record before it starts growing back 😛

That’s a great shout, Wendy! And yes - there are a couple of charities here in the UK doing the same kind of thing. I’ll investigate and report back later in the week. Thanks! 🙂

"I'm Growing a Beard Downstairs for Christmas" - by Kate Miller-Heidke ft Johann of The Beards

PS, I once volunteered for an onstage contest during Rebel Bingo at the Woodford Folk Festival, a HUGE festival Christmas - New Year week here in Queensland, where Kate is a beloved annual highlight. Previous contests included physical and mental feats of skill, and I felt I could do well and maybe win a prize. Instead, host Rebel decided to have my group play Heads Up, where the name of a famous person is displayed on your head, where everyone but you can see it, and you have to ask yes/no questions to guess who you are. The other contestants were mostly internationally famous people, and they all guessed them pretty quickly. I - the recently arrived migrant with the funny accent - was up there all alone at the end, completely stumped. The entire audience were shouting clues at me, and still … nada. No clue. My public shame dragged on and on, until at last I had to admit defeat, and the whole auditorium yelled the answer at me.

Ah, yes, of course! A nephew of mine grew his hair long for that very reason. I think it was for one of the charities that make real hair wigs for folk who have lost their hair because of chemo treatment or similar.

This silly Seasonal ditty from British comedy group The Goodies is one I’ve always loved. It’s also my first ever Twofer! It qualified for Wendy’s Season as it’s a Christmas song, and for this Season because it mentions Hair in the second or so line. It’s a bit rough and ready as I don’t have masses of time at the moment. Anyway, Merry Christmas everyone!
