potmo Swinging on a Star – Bing Crosby Music Jimmy Van Heusen Lyrics Johnny Burke Ok another unambiguous qualifier! I actually don't hate how this one turned out.
dr_mitch Time for some Lou Reed… Satellite of Love. Apologies for being too busy pretending to be Lou Reed to hit the actual notes. Still, there's a nice jangly 8 string to listen to as well, and the bim bam bom bits.
Barbablanca Here's my contribution to this Season. It was inspired by that classic S.F. Film "Forbidden Planet" (starring pre-comic Leslie Nielsen and my youthful crush Anne Francis. We had an album of songs by the latter with a very "provocative" cover! 😁). More details in the YouTube Description
Joko What a week it's been. Not in a good way. Lost a lot. My best friend and housemate has fled the country due to the ongoing civil war here. I woke up this morning to find my beloved motorcycle stolen. Taken from INSIDE my house. Along with 3 of my favorite ukuleles that happened to be in the front room last night.
dr_mitch I can't resist playing another today - an obvious one for the season, Rocket Man by Elton John.
DelGriff Thanks for hosting, Edwin! :-) This is an album track from probably my favourite Depeche Mode album, Violator. Yes - it’s from the 80s! Baritone uke and various synth additions, with some vocal harmonies too. Listen with headphones/earbuds if you can. Star, moon and sky in the lyrics. Waiting For The Night - Depeche Mode cover (SOTU 726)
AlanDP "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" written by Herb Magidson and Ben Oakland from 1946. According to the sheet music, this was from a musical film titled Hats Off, starring Mae Clarke and John Payne, neither of whom I've ever heard of before.
CanadaJim THE SPACESHIP SONG - *Herbert Butros Khaury I'm so sorry that my sound craps out after about a minute. Thanks for hosting this season Edwin!
uke4ia There's a couple of '70s prog rock songs I'd love to do for this week, but they're obscure enough that the chords or tabs aren't available. If I start now, I might figure them out by the time Edwin does this theme again 5 years from now. ("One o'Clock Tomorrow" by FM and "Pulling Faces" by Anthony Phillips). For now, here's a song called "Stars" by Lisa Germano.
AlanDP Here's a sort of medley of three songs, short versions with no repeats or extra stanzas. "The Moon Is Low" from 1930, from the movie Montana Moon starring Joan Crawford. Second is "Sail Along, Silv'ry Moon" from 1937, which I had written an arrangement for and must have practiced quite a lot because playing it was very familiar but for some reason I never recorded it. Last is "Mandy (Come Out In the Pale Moonlight)" from 1911 written by Chico Marx.
uke4ia This is a 2024 song called "Astronaut" by Tears for Fears. I discovered it a few weeks ago when I found it on a "Best Singles of 2025" list. I transposed it down 3 steps, then tried to make a video this afternoon, but I still couldn't hit the notes in the chorus. Tonight I dropped it another 2 steps and tried again. Man, those guys can sing high. The producer/co-songwriter rhymed "astronaut" with "fly on a missile Castro bought" because he thought it would be fun to rhyme the whole word "astronaut". Until I Googled the lyrics, I thought they were singing about a "gastropod".
UkeCan1 Well, this is the obvious twofer, I think. It's the only song I can think of that contains the word "obsession", and it also happens to name a fictional planet. It's sung by an alien from that planet about both his alien origin and his obsession. Here's "Sweet Transvestite" from "Rocky Horror Picture Show".
kolibri Gliese 581C is an exoplanet, discovered in 2007. It was initially reported to be the first potentially Earth-like planet. The discovery inspired Estonian songwriter Sven Lõhmus and singer Laura, who recorded '581C' in January 2008.
Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay OK, this isn't my fault. I wanted to do an original twofer, and what I had to work with was objects in space and obsession, so naturally I HAD to write a song titled "I'm Obsessed with Uranus"
potmo Talking to the Moon Bruno Mars This may be the most modern song I have done, as this is less than ten years old! This may be the ultimate twofer. Talk about obsession! And we have the moon as main subject with sun and stars thrown in the mix, and we get Mars in the name!
dr_mitch Time for a last one from me this season (unless I have time and feel inspired tomorrow morning). It's a baritone ukulele version Shine on Harvest Moon, a classic from 1908 - and so certainly predates the existence of baritone ukuleles. I've been wanting to record a baritone version of this one for ages, and this season is a good excuse, even if it barely fits. Thanks Edwin - it's been cosmic!
Xamar25 Sister Moon and Brother Sun by the Okee Dokee Brothers. For a change of pace, here’s a sweet children’s song that fits the theme. The original has Navajo chanting I didn’t try to approximate
