SOTU 732 – Old Man Take a Look at My Life

AlanDP

Here's a "David" song for the 24th. This song has an interesting back story, so I made a video about the song also.

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay

Here is my take on a Byrds cover of a Dylan song. I never knew what the name of this song was until now when I tracked down the chords for it. My Back Pages.

Men Called Uncle – Elvis Costello

I can never get enough of EC's witty lyrics. This song always conjured up images to me of men that are much older than their dates. I'm not sure that is what this song is about, as his lyrics are always deliberately ambiguous.

"If I say you're the one do you think that I'm serious
You get that kind of talk from older men

i could swear i could promise that I'd always be true to you
But we may not live to be so old

This song is filled with some great snappy lines. I hope you can understand the lyrics.
I see a bunch of new songs! I will get to them soon. Special shout out to my sister! I was starting to miss you! Glad to see you back.

OK I think I am all caught up! What a nice set of birthday presents so far(?) Not sure if anybody is still on Feb 24. I hae an hour to go. We are up to 16 songs total. My bonus birthday topics yielded a great find by AlanDP with the "House of David Blues". And what a cool weird crazy story. And we also got a great performance of what might be my favorite Ramones tunes.
My sister returned with a special birthday beatles tribute, Berni threw down a nice sad story and all kinds of classic songs about aging are now on our playlist. It was a good birthday. Thanks and thanks to all the people I didn't just mention. I truly have enjoyed every performance.
I don't consider hosting to be a chore. It is a lot of fun. Keep 'em coming! Oh and I am going to go ahead and extend the birthday special to the end of the week if anyone likes the additional options. I would think the 1960 one would have intrigued somebody.

potmo

oh and if somebody is not on the playlist and I have not commented on your vid let me know please!

dr_mitch

@UkeFoote got there first, but it's such a perfect song for the season, with our host's fondness for the Beatles (which I share) and the theme. Though I nearly changed it to "When I'm 66".

Here's my take on it.

People My Age - John Gorka
*
You have a few years to go yet David.

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay

Here is one that I wrote that is about my retiring to the Northwoods of Wisconsin. I don't use the term 'old" at all in the song, but why would I? I'm only 70.

potmo

Yay another original, another Beatles tune and another Canada Jim classic. Looks like the midweek lull is upon us. I look forward to the next wave! Please let me know if I missed you.

My Old Man - Jerry Jeff Walker

Sorry that the sound craps out near the end.

DelGriff

Thanks for hosting, David - and happy birthday! :-)

The song I’ve chosen to cover this week is one I’ve always really loved, but strangely never considered playing until now. The very first word in the lyric is ‘old’.

Baritone uke with some synth additions, homemade drum track, and vocal harmonies in the choruses. Really pleased with how it turned out!

Ironic - Alanis Morissette cover (SOTU 732)

AN OLD MAN'S ADVICE - Vance Gilbert

A tune by one of my favourite singer/songwriters that fits David's theme perfectly. There's a link on the youTube video to a version I did with the guitar a few years back on which Vance was nice enough to leave a comment.

The WRAP's up for Season 731.

Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain by Willie Nelson.

I hope this counts! “Now my hair has turned to silver/All my life I’ve loved in vain. The full version was blocked by YouTube so I uploaded just the section with relevant lyrics.

This is called "The Old and the Young". It's a 2013 song by the band Midlake.

I'll try to find a song that's more about aging before the week's out (that I haven't already done). But I wanted to make sure I at least got a song in this week.

By the way, back in Season 155 I played "Old Folks Boogie" by Little Feat. I won't be doing a new video of it this week, but here's a link: Old Folks Boogie - Season 155

Xamar25 This video didn't work for me. I am getting a message "this video is not available". I have done like 70 videos and I put the name of the song and bands on each one and I have yet to have encountered a copyright issue. Maybe somebody here knows what the deal is? I know that when I go to your sight and choose video I dont see any of your posts here, but I make my videos public and I make it for adults.

potmo try again. I reduced the length to one minute so now it doesn’t violate copyright. That’s probably more than anyone wants to hear in any case🙃

OLDER THAN MY OLD MAN NOW - Loudon Wainwright III

I can identify with this song of Loudon's. My dad was 68 when he passed, so, so I'm 14 years older than Dad ever was. His dad died in his 40s and my ex-wife died just after her 40th birthday. I did this song for Brian Fergus's Season about a year ago. Hope it's not too soon to repeat.

Pancho and Lefty by Townes Van Zandt,

“Poets tell how Pancho fell..but Lefty’s living in a cheap hotel… and now he’s getting old..”

Let’s see if I can upload the complete version
