I'm from the Bay Area and I hadn't even heard of this festival, and I thought I was fairly music savvy.
I've been a fan of Grandaddy for 20 years. They;re also from Northern California (Modesto) and whereas they never had a lot of main-stream success, their 2003 album "Sumday" is one of my favorite collections of tracks ever.
I remember back in 2006 when I was just starting to get an interest in making videos, I used a Grandaddy song to make a video. I really liked the auto-compose function on my software. One could just pop any piece of audio into a collection of video tracks and the app would sync the tempo with the cuts, add transitions and effects, and make a cool montage video (2000's standards) with not a lot of work. I had some interesting video clips showing a local landmark (the Toilet House) and I used the song I cover here to make a vid.
Also back then, all your favorite musicians were on MySpace. It seemed only polite to send a message to Grandaddy's MySpace page, letting them know of my innocent copyright infringement. About 5 minutes after sending htem the IM, I got a response. I'm guessing it was from Jason Lytle, front man and songwriter for Grandaddy. His response was first time I'd ever received communication directly from a musician I admired. Jason asked me in allcaps
YOU DID WHAT??!?
He was pissed off.
YOU DID WHAT?!?!?
We didn't have a conversation per se, but he at least acknowledged "Well, what's done is done"
Grandaddy performed at Noise Pop in 1999, 2000 and 2002. Then again 2019.
