SOTU 735 - The Twentieth Century

AlanDP

1980s.

Barbablanca

Here is my 1980s song. I thought I had not recorded this. I checked using Google's AI - It didn't find it. So I recorded it. Then I checked my onw files and found I had done it for a season some nine years (or so) ago. So much for AI searches, eh?

Anyway, sadly, though this song was written in 1984, it is still relevant today and no more so than in Spain, where "Macho Men" still strut their stuff and vote for an openly Fascist party so as to counter the "FeminNazis!" Jeez….

Me again. A quick and dirty song from the dirty 30s, widely covered and modified. It's Rag Mama.

dr_mitch

And now the 1940s… I bring you, Ghost Riders in the Sky. And that's half-way there for me!

dr_mitch

And now the 1950s. I might actually manage a song per decade. This one is Mack the Knife, a loose translation of a German song from a musical in the 1920s, Die Moritat von Mackie Messer. This translation was first recorded in English in 1955 by Louis Armstrong.

There was an earlier, less successful but more literal translation of the song (and the musical) in 1933, though that translation and the German original is significantly more vicious than the modern version.

Well, here it is.

"I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" Hank Williams 1947

Happy to see Hank show up twice this week. He has not been very fairly represented in the recent past. Sorry I overdid the whining. I should just let Hank do Hank.

"Old Man Trump" 1954

OK I dont want Mitch to feel bad about doing three in a row so ....
Yes this is about the orange antichrist's daddy, who according to Donald's niece, Mary is the reason DJT became the piece of shit he is today.
The EIsenhower Administration sued the Trump organization (chaired by papa Trump, but Donald was president) for descrimination.

UkeCan1 Ha! Great minds think alike. Both Vacation and Viva Las Vegas (double dip!) were on my short list. I was going to do the Dead Kennedy's version which seems to share your disdain for some of the activities promoted. Unfortunately, I failed to deliver any tunes at all that week – my first nofer since joining last September.

…and I made it to 1990.

Some of my favourite albums in the seventies were from Jethro Tull. Album after great album. Here's the acoustic section from Aqualung off album of same name. On Guitalele.

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay

AlanDP BINGO!

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay

Whew, got all those recorded and added to the playlist…. now to actually listen to them 🙂

potmo

Stuck in the Middle with You – Stealer's Wheel 1972

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay OK. Be careful what you wish for!

potmo

Clampdown – The Clash 1980 (sort of)

London Calling actually came out in 1979, but they released Clampdown as a single in Australia in 1980, so I think that counts?

potmo

Drunken Angel – Lucinda Williams 1998

For the cycle! The bingo! Around the World!

dr_mitch

Okay, more done… from the 1960s, here's Hey Jude from the Beatles. And if my singing is out of tune, it's because the strings haven't settled on the new uke that arrived today.

dr_mitch

And from the 1970s, we have Pictures of Lily from The Who. Maybe I'll manage the one per decade target.
