Season 744 - Pinball!

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay

johnpoole And then that horrible fifth rock opera.. "Frosty", that was set in Wisconsin during the winter and featured that song "Pinball Blizzard"

UkeCan1

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay And then it just plummeted downhill from there, with "Eddie" and "Pinball Scissors".

man i loved all these! really bringing back awesome memories.
i was in a school play in Grade 6 about a detective hired to track down a rampant pinball machine thief.
for months, all they had to go on was a tye-dyed stocking that he'd inadvertently left at the scene of his last heist.
the cops affectionately dubbed him the 'Pinball Vizard'.

UkeCan1

There are a bunch of songs on Ultimate Guitar with "Pinball" in the title.

Here's a fun one - "Pinball Anonymous" by The Willis Brothers

Thanks for hosting, Jon! 🙂

I hope you’ll forgive me posting my ‘blast from the past’ first this week, but there is a reason. I wrote this one (yes it’s an original) nearly 6 years ago as a tribute to my 3 fantastic brothers, and remembering the fun we had as kids playing football in the local park. I wanted to post this now because my eldest brother (and lifelong hero), John, is having some potentially major health issues and is undergoing surgery today. Just felt right to do it. I promise I’ll be posting something new a bit later in the week.

Football In The Park (SOTU 433) - an original song by me

LimousinLil

Greetings again, Sir! I seem to be intent on lowering the tone this week - and anything to get away from The News for an hour or two - so I hope you will forgive my rather liberal interpretation of your pinball-associated words. Well, you DID say that if you think it fits, then it does, and …. drain = plughole??? (HEALTH WARNING: Listening to this song might prove challenging for those with weak bladders!)

OneManAndHisPGUke

johnpoole The Who have a lesser known rock opera called "Jimmy". All about a pin ball playing Chameleon. Hit song was " Pinball Lizard"!

Know it well, they also wrote that famous song for Elvis, “In The Gecko” .

OneManAndHisPGUke

Had a bit of bother with my electronic robot salamander the other day. The remote control kept stop ing altogether. Apparently it’s a common problem, E-Reptile Disfunction.

Shall I quit now?

A Clue for the Pinball Vizard

OneManAndHisPGUke

Thanks for hosting Jon, and after those awful jokes, the least I could do was to post an actual song to your Season. We used to do this song this way at the Bradford Ukes ( many moons ago when I was a regular attendee).

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay

I wanted to do another one of Randy's songs this week so I looked through them and found one with balls… well, at least it mentions balls. He did this one way back in season 140. While he and I were very different in many ways, one thing we did agree on is our dislike of cats.

jon

some real gems since yesterday's update!
thank you to Wendy, Del, Val, John and Kevin 🙂 just loving the real diversity
of genres we're covering this week, it's a fun mixture of styles and songs -
the playlist is loaded w/ lots of things i've not heard before and am going to learn myself
Wendy's "Pinball Anonymous" a classic case in point. how on earth have i
never heard this folky nugget before and why??? so funny and very close to the bone…

pinball machines, arcade games, cassette tapes and books were the things that drained
my entire pocket money up til i started uni. so when i b/came an adult and earned actual money
i just bought my own pinball haha…no more rolls of coins disappearing anymore lol

Del's tribute to his brothers was a classic slice of 80s style pop and so worth a relisten.
Val's music hall number was a whole bunch of fun. John's classy melding of pinball wizard and
folsom prison blues was an absolute treat and how awesome to hear one of Randy's originals
again - a wonderful song which i have great sympathy for and feel guilty about. arrrgghh…cats!!!!
i've owned two but gee how they can manipulate an impressionable, vulnerable heart… 🙂
thank you for playing it Kevin

oh,you didn't know you needed to see this clip today but you do
one guy's top 10 pinball machines of the 70's

jon

an impromptu bash at "St James Infirmary"
big big thanks to joojoo who went way beyond the call of duty,
having to hold up the camera for 5+ minutes 🙂

AlanDP

Jon, did you ever see this one? Black Knight. The feed store--that is, the store where you would go to buy feed for your livestock--in my hometown had one of these for a while. I played it a lot. I liked it because it had two levels.

jon

AlanDP awesome machine, Alan! yes, i had my share of game time on Black Knight.
fantastic era of pinball. the late 70s-early 80s were the days i got hooked on them. Black Knight was in
a milk bar-parlour called 'Henry's' near to where i lived in Kogarah, New South Wales for awhile. 🙂
a fellow actually restored one last year and i was sorely tempted; he was also working on a 'Firepower'
and 'Blackout' at the same time. all great players. i ended up using my money to buy
a White Water (Williams, 1993) that had just had a full resto done on it and i don't regret it for a second.
it's one that had been on my bucket list for many years and not so easy to come across any more,
especially with the full restoration. thanks for sharing that film, mate. PAPApinball is a super channel
for any lover of pinball machines for sure 🙂

What an awesome Season, Jon!!!

so good to see that folks are enjoying the theme, especially good to see folks who have not posted for a while participating again.

As you know I made these drawings just yesterday. I have no pinball songs to play for now, but if I take the word "KNOCK" as part of the way you play your pinball games, then this should totally qualify!

"That seemed to KNOCK some sense into her because she turned to the doctor, with open eyes, and said: Thank you!"

These drawings are based on a true story.

"Satin Doll", by Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, and Johnny Mercer, for soprano ukulele with whistling and singing, with an overdub of Ashbory Ubass. Not only is "Satin Doll' the name of a mid '70s pinball machine I remember from 50 years ago, but the main character in the song is "flippin'"! Careful listeners may notice that my gal may be a bit less sophisticated in her knowledge of ancient languages than the original.

Thanks for hosting, Jon!

johnpoole

OneManAndHisPGUke Sorry to hear about the malfunctioning reptile it can be a bit scary.. But that’s no reason to rush out of your house.

I think you may be suffering from premature evacuation!

UkeCan1

John P's "Penny Arcade" reminded me of this old chestnut that mentions one.

"It's Only a Paper Moon" by Harburg, Rose, and Arlen

My blast from the past is “Tommy Can You Hear Me”, from 8 years ago.

My bass player Borfus and I performed the entire Tommy record (well the Cliff notes 30 minute version, anyway) on the occasion of the LP’s 50th anniversary. Here’s a short excerpt, with just me multitracking the bass part.

Thanks again, Jon!
