Season 744 - Pinball!

dr_mitch

Another song that hints at gambling. Though winning a fortune in a game in Las Vegas or Monaco could be big Pinball prize money!

dr_mitch

I posted another and deleted - I'd lost my voice and pushed on regardless. I'll try again with it though.

some wonderful stuff since yesterday's update
from Joo, Brian, Wendy and Mitch:
Joo made the most gorgeous film with freshly drawn cartoon panels and music
and a heartfelt story of friendship. her reading is as beautiful as it is impactful.
Wendy did a great version one of my fave songs from the tin pan era,
Brian did a mindblowing version of 'Satin Doll' and playing his extra ball,
totally slayed 'Tommy Can You Hear Me?'
and now - we all gotta get together and help poor Mitch find an ageing, rich man to fund his retirement!
great Abba cover Paul!
thanks you awesome folks! 🙂

a Mountain Goats song based on the 1985 Nintendo arcade game, 'Super Mario Bros',
sung from the point of view of the character Toad,
who exclaims the title of the song when he is rescued by Mario
John Darnielle shares some thoughts on the song here: https://themountaingoats.fandom.com/wiki/Thank_You_Mario_But_Our_Princess_Is_in_Another_Castle
i had some fun recording a simple version of it this morning on the uke
and roped joojoo to sing a harmony in a couple of spots -
one of those songs that takes a couple of minutes to record but the film clip takes a couple of hours lol,
but that was even more fun!
we've got this plastic dragon in the cactus garden and so i used him to play Bowser 🙂
"Thank You Mario But Our Princess Is In Another Castle"

And, again, greetings Mein Host … it's not everyone who has a plastic dragon in his garden! This is my retro-Del-special, which I feel is particularly Jon-appropriate. As fellow bibliophiles, many are the book recommendations that you and I have traded over the years, not too mention ACTUAL books winging their way back and forth across the oceans. I might even have had you in mind when I wrote this little ditty, although I'm not sure where the cowboy and librarian came from, and as for the balls reference … I couldn't possibly comment! Anyway, herewith ….

Wow! 65 posts so far! Pinball Rules!

This one was inspired by a period that my wife Carmen went through in the early days of the internet. She became obsessed with a pinball game on the PC and spent hours glued to the screen. Of course, I exaggerated the idea for the song; Carmen never needed therapy, but every morning when I have coffee I see people who probably do. They feed coin after coin in the one armed bandits (now armless, but not harmless). I once watched a woman who won the jackpot spend the next hour slowly feeding her winnings back into the machine! Where's the shrugging emoji when you need it?

Here's my song entitled "Playful Obsession?" I hope you like it.

jon

Val came in overnight w/ an ol' tearjerker cowboy song which referenced a couple of pinballs
real good story Val and excellent songwriting!
and Berni also with a sad tale but great insights into addiction
and a really interesting chord progression that would have totally flummoxed me to sing over lol
super song, thanks Berni! and as i said on the you tube, the pinball references really tickled me mate 🙂
quieter since the last update but so rapt w/ the fantastic songs everyone has been bringing
thus far on the season and really hope the music continues!
thanks all xo

dr_mitch

I once played a Led Zeppelin pinball machine. This obscure Led Zeppelin song you probably haven't heard of mentions light and lights a few times, meaning it fits the Season…

OneManAndHisPGUke

My blast from the past is a bit Thornton rule in being very tenuous, but it was the best I could find, an original called “Winner”.

OneManAndHisPGUke

I was looking on my tablet for the lyrics to Winner above, and couldn’t find them, but I found the lyrics to Angel From The Coast off Thin Lizzy’s ( arguably) greatest album Jailbreak. No idea why I’d gone to the trouble of saving them, although it is one of my fave Lizzy songs. Anyway, it contains the line “Sally’s took to playing poker” so that qualifies it for the season, and therefore I did a very rough n ready take ( my second take, it will have to do).

Joko

Here's a sexy lil tune titled "Video Games"

DelGriff

Thanks again for hosting, Jon! :-)

This is a song I’ve wanted to do for a while, but I never felt my vocal was quite right for it. So I asked Bob @bobjking if he’d like to sing it for me and, thankfully, he agreed. And, as expected, he smashed it out of the park! And, even better, he added in a fantastic uke solo as the icing on the cake. I’m playing baritone uke, with the usual synth additions and harmony vocals. Really pleased with this one. And “rollin’” is the qualifying lyric.

Thanks, Bob - you’re a star! :-)

Proud Mary - Creedence Clearwater Revival cover with my friend Bob J King @bobjking (SOTU 744)

treated to some real special ones overnight here at Pinball Central!
Mitch's playing and arranging of Zeppelin was the first time i didn't switch off the radio
after the first 2 bars of the song like i usually do. really dynamic performance and maybe
one of my faves of Paul's so far on the journey
John bought a classic original that i remembered from the first time around w/ his characteristic wit
and dry humour and introduced (me) to a bangin Thin Lizzy song w/ some super up tempo playing
and a great vocal.
Joko's Lana Del Ray cover of 'Video Games' was brilliant. stripped back and intense and from the guts
and again, one of my faves of his for awhile. awesome singing. and playing. totally sold it
Del and Bobby went next level w/ their Proud Mary collab. when Del collabs w/ someone
you know you're in for a treat. no exception here, thank you fellas. super arrangement & production
from Del and Bobby's lead break was gold and worth the price of admission alone
thank you lads for these ripper tunes!
playlist is updated til this point and a couple of days & change left in the season
have an awesome day one and all 🙂

jon

an extra ball from me, 'pinball millionaire' by Hank Locklin 🙂

jon

and Wendy's fun version of this ol 1933 standard made me wanna play it too 🙂
"It's Only a Paper Moon"

CanadaJim

I've had a busy couple of weeks, and not had much time to post, so it's time to make use of my "THE EXTRA BALL/DEL GRIFF SPECIAL option.
This song has already been covered twice this Season by Wendy and Jon, but it's such a great song that it can take another play.
I've done it 3 times and, from 16 months ago, here's my newest version, It's Only A Paper Moon - Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg & Billy Rose

jon

thank you Jim for that gorgeous version of "It's Only a Paper Moon"
so many beautiful songs from the 20s and 30s, and this one is right near the
top of the tree for many of us i think! and that characteristic smile at the end
gets me every time. thanks mate 🙂
season #745 has been announced and looks like it'll be a whole bunch of fun!
thanks Joko!
big thank you to everyone for the way you've embraced this week,
it's been a joy so far xo

LimousinLil

Bonjour, encore une fois! I was AMAZED to find this in my feed this morning … apparently, "One is Rapt"!

UkeCan1
