Season 746 - Power Outage?

UkeCan1

It's Season 746 start time, and no sign of Joko. I'm beginning to think Jon may have been spot on with his prediction over on the WEEKLY PREDICTION thread, and that Myanmar's notoriously intermittent power situation could possibly be the cause.

I also think this could make an excellent theme!

I propose … at least until Joko arrives with his planned theme …

Songs about or mentioning power, electricity, energy, blackouts, and related concepts, in title or lyrics
Songs by an artist with Power or a related concept in their name
Songs about things one might do when the power goes out

PLAYLIST

[EDIT] Okay, Graham has taken over as host and has broadened the theme to include additional options. Go to post #21 for details.

UkeCan1

The song I recorded with my friend Nina today at our picnic in the park happens to qualify as a twofer. You might think I gamed the system by creating the theme to match the song, but no, I noticed it after.

I was working on this song this morning for 745's gypsy theme … after it infected me all day yesterday with its singsong-y chorus. While I was working it out, Nina called to suggest our spontaneous outing, so we did it together.

In it, "one night the lights go dim". I think that's a perfect fit!

"Say, Has Anybody Seen My Sweet Gypsy Rose" by Tony Orlando and Dawn

UkeCan1

Oops … I meant to post this only at 745 … but I put it here but accident. Never mind … I'm having a party over here all by myself. I hope you all will join me … or Joko will arrive soon to rescue us all!

We also did an abbreviated version of this other song with an unnecessarily long title, accelerando:

I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles) by The Proclaimers

You might argue that getting drunk and havering are things you might do when the power goes out … or even walking a thousand miles, or falling down at the door (because you can't see in the dark?), and that this is therefore also a twofer … but I'm already running a one-woman show over at the usurper 746 that no one asked me to create … so I'll just leave this here.

DelGriff

Thanks so much for stepping in, Wendy - great theme idea if Joko is a no show! 🙂

UkeCan1

DelGriff It's really Jon's idea … or "Randy's". I saw the prediction and thought, that's actually an excellent theme idea!

And, who remembers anymore, after 745 Seasons, but I don't think I've seen it before?

LimousinLil

Do we have a theme? I am very experienced in dealing with power outages .. seems to happen here three or four times a year. What I mainly do is sit in the dark or try to read by candlelight … how DID they ever manage in the "olden days"??? I DO have four rechargeable table lamps which help a lot … if I've remembered to charge them, that is! Oh, and I have just replaced my gas/electric cooker with an all-electric one and bought a camping gaz butane hob for emergencies. Haven't had to use it yet and have now convinced myself that, if I attempt to operate it indoors, I shall expire from carbon monoxide poisoning. So … my life in time of power cuts is exceedingly boring and more than somewhat dangerous. Are we going to go ahead with this Del, Wendy …. anybody????

DelGriff

LimousinLil

Yes - still no sign of Joko, so Wendy’s plan is now officially this week’s Season:

UkeCan1 Songs about or mentioning power, electricity, energy, blackouts, and related concepts, in title or lyrics
Songs by an artist with Power or a related concept in their name
Songs about things one might do when the power goes out

PLAYLIST

Thanks again, Wendy! 🙂

jon

UkeCan1 good to see the week up and running! thanks Wendy!
yes, this prediction was one that i was actually going to do the next time i hosted!
it's an awesome theme and tonnes of ways into it…
i did wonder if i should keep my powder dry and not use it in a prediction
but when Joko did the disappearing act yesterday i just couldn't resist using it as the
746 prediction cause it was too perfect haha

UkeCan1

jon Do you want to take over hosting?

I'm not really up for full-time hosting duties, though I will listen and add people's videos to the playlist. But I'm also really happy to hand over thread ownership and playlist ownership to you if you want it!

And, feel free to tweak the specifics of the theme to whatever you were thinking.

johnpoole

Watt songs will suit? Ohm gunna have to think about it. I'm sure if I conduct a search I can come up with some real joules!

jon

UkeCan1 no mate, i'm not able to this week -
dunno the expectations these days but if there's a playlist for us then that sounds like a good start,
anything else is a bonus xo thanks for getting things rolling yesterday, i think the pad on my
right index finger was screaming from checking in all through the day to see if 746 had been posted lol

LimousinLil

johnpoole John, you are a positive powerhouse of punnery!!!

jon

an original song for the season
cause, well, what else is there to do when the power goes out other than light a candle? 😉
i wrote the lyrics in the you tube description thingy
"Candle" 🙂

UkeCan1

It's very quiet here. I know we started the theme late, but I hope you all will find time to join in before we're through. So far I am commenting on videos - all 1 of them - and will do my best to be a proper host.

Meanwhile, here's a Monday twofer from me:

"Signs" by Five Man Electrical Band, which qualifies for the band name, but it's also a song about who has the power and who doesn't, and by what means.

And I sped up the final choruses for 745. I do hope Joko is okay and will be back soon!

OneManAndHisPGUke

LimousinLil John, you are a positive powerhouse of punnery!!!

He certainly is in the current climate. His puns come like a volt out of the blue. I will try and contribute if I get time, but it might take me a (Faraday C)age to come up with something…..

UkeCan1

Hi Wendy, I'll take over if you want, it's a while since I hosted and the weather forecast has changed our planned activities for this week. I'll probably broaden the theme slightly, be back later when I've had a think about it.

LimousinLil

Hello, Wendy (or Graham?) … thanks for stepping up! I recorded this today and am now thoroughly confused as to whether it still fits. The link was somewhat tenuous in the first place, but, for some reason best known to myself, when I saw the "power" theme, the actor, Tyrone Power, came to mind, and I was able to link him to a song, which he recorded with Judy Holliday and others in 1955. SO … what do you do when there's a power cut? Well, you obviously catch a train to visit your beloved, who lives somewhere where there ISN'T a power cut …. hmmm!

LimousinLil

OneManAndHisPGUke What is it with these "John's" … of both the South and North varieties? I feel there must be some connection. I can only hope that we can now be fully insulated from this output of puns!

UkeCan1

LimousinLil Yes, Val - power-related artist names are one of the options, so Tyrone Power definitely qualifies!

Graham @Bystander - that would be great if you'd like to take over hosting. I think the theme is already pretty broad, but feel free to add to it if you wish. I'll share the playlist with you so you can add to it.

OneManAndHisPGUke

I declare the following post a pun-free zone.

Thanks Wendy and/or Graham for stepping in to host. Here’s an obvious one for the Season, Electricity by OMD. A one take wonder I’m sure you’ll be flabbergasted to know…..
