SOTU 747 ~ WHAT'S IN A DAY ?

joo

"Spring's a girl from the streets at night" - from Dirty Old Town by Ewan MacColl.

On TV this evening i saw a report about a young homeless man who laid dead in the midst of one of Sydney’s busiest central train stations but no one noticed his dead body for 6 days.

He had moved to Australia to study, carrying with him hopes of building a better life

Although this Ewan MacColl song isn't about homelessness, it came to my mind.

I was playing and singing very softly because Jon was reading. On guitalele.

A belated hello, Graham and thanks for hosting yet again … you are a hero, Sir! I've got an awful lot of listening to catch up on … apologies to All. This is a "morning" song, written by Sylvia (of Ian & Sylvia) in 1961. I'm sorry the video is so dark … I had to put the blinds down because the sun was too bright and then I had to put the light on because I couldn't see anything.

jon

an original song for the season -
a tongue in cheek tribute to my close friend Geoff who was taken from us way too soon
and which really is more fiction than fact
"The Ballad of Geoff the Accountant"

here's a video to show 11 ukes I have painted over these past months. I wrote some words based on each uke - you can see them as I sing. "The song starts at 3AM in the morning all the way to nighttime." (EDIT: I read what i wrote here and realised it sounded like i had just produced a song that lasted more than a day long!!!! LOL. I meant that the lyrics described what happened from 3AM till nighttime.)

the music is improvised, really. 2 chords. Can't really call it music. Thanks to Jon for buying these ukes for me to paint on! We had a lot of fun with them. Me painting them and he playing them. The cheapest one was $2 or $3. The last one, the baritone - that's not a thrift shop find but something Jon already had. The one with the lights - that was a gift from an online uke friend.

You can find the lyrics in the YouTube description box.

Thanks for hosting, and sorry for being super busy this week. Here's a quick one take wonder from me - Sunny Afternoon.

Edit: Double post.

A very croaky and chesty rendition, a condition which scuppers my plans
for other songs featuring words outside the Morning ,Afternoon, Evening and Night.

Ah well, 'tis what it is.

jon

a Woody Guthrie song and with a 15 year flashback
thanks again Graham 🙂
"New Found Land"

Thanks for hosting again, Graham! 🙂

David Gray is a fantastic songwriter - great music and especially poignant lyrics. And this one is no exception. The qualifying line is: ‘Perfect summer’s night…’

Baritone uke with synth bass, strings, music box, homemade drum track, and some vocal harmonies here and there too.

The One I Love - David Gray cover (SOTU 747)

I see the World Cup Soccer has started. Apparently Australia is the red hot favourite to take out the trophy…..or maybe try to score at least one goal. Preferably not an own goal 🙂 I do have a soft spot for England..could they finally do it????

jon

a sweet old hymn w/ the sunrise 🙂
"I'll Fly Away"

gorgeous sunny and still early winter morning today where we are, i
took a little walk along the beach and the native reserve out front of our place to soak it all in
a new-to-me song that i've heard the title of since forever but never bothered to listen or learn
"That Lucky Old Sun (Just Rolls Around Heaven All Day)"

I was planning to work this one up a bit but we've had a new addition to the family (earlier than anticipated) so I'm not going to be around for about 48 hours (Friday to Sunday evening), We've got a 300 mile round trip to see the little lady in question, I'll do an update on the season later today and catch up when we return home.

Anyway, Terry meets Julie at Waterloo station every Friday night apparently.

CeeJay

I was going to do " Twilight Time " by the Moody Blues.

But I thought revert to type and croak this one .

As promised, a brief update on the season before I disappear for a couple of days.

Well, we've had 26 entries from 14 seasonistas which is pretty much in line with what we got at the same stage last week on Sotu 746.

Thanks to everyone who's taken part, I've enjoyed listening to everyone and hopefully the playlist is up to date and I've commented on everything.

If I've missed anything let me know and I'll rectify things when I'm back sometime Sunday evening.

I’ve done night so now I’m doing morning. “How you meet the morning….” go the lyrics. Written by Harry Wood, covered famously by Fats Waller, and many others since. “When Somebody Thinks You’re Wonderful”. What a sweet lovely song.

Mezcalero

I thought I posted this yesterday, but I must have done something wrong. Trying again! Thanks for hosting Graham and I hope you're all doing well ~

Thanks for hosting, Graham. I can't really do this song justice but I think it's perfect for both the season and the time of year. For those not familiar with "June Hymn" by The Decemberists, it begins with;

Here's a hymn to welcome in the day, heralding a summer's early sway,

And all the bulbs are coming in

PS. Apologies, I don't know how to link a video properly so that it shows up. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
