Wim!!! Welcome back!!! Great to see you here! :-)

jon

i'm not sure what a polka is exactly lolexcept that it's 2/4 time which is just like
so much of the old time folk songs and childrens music that i've loved for a lifetime
this is a part original part trad song in that sort of spirit
"long summer day"

CeeJay I think you’ve hit the nail right on the head CJ - if AL parodied a song, then you can play any song by the artist who played the song that was parodied by AL. Hopefully that’s as clear as mud. 😀

DesertPavement

Wow, I always love hearing from folks who have stepped away for a while, no matter the reason. Great to see and hear you Wim.

The playlist should be up to date as of this post.

Also, it is Friday (on the east coast of North America at least), and I’m going to make one more adjustment to the “rules” heading into the weekend (of the east coast of North America): During the last 2 days of the season you may play any “Weird” Al (as in A L) song OR any original parody.

Nearsighted-Lemon-McKay

Going through the list of Al's "in the style of", nothing was really yanking my crank. Then I came across "In the style of The Beach Boys/ Jan and Dean" So here is one of my favorites from Jan and Dean.

CeeJay

DesertPavement Hopefully that’s as clear as mud.

My kind of instructions , 🥳👍

Late to the party this week. Been preparing for a gig tonight and also putting up with 35ºCtemperatures all day and half the night!

This is an original in a style that I am not known for "80s Synth Pop" I am not sure I could say which 80s band inspired this one, but I am sure you 1980s buffs will suggest a band this might resemble.

The synth here is not played on a keyboard. It's played by using my steel strung Tenor Ukulele through a curious pedal by Mooer, which tracks your notes perfectly and adds synth sounds along with arpeggiated harmonies.

Hope you enjoy my Chance Encounter

Sorry, Andy, nothing to do with this week, but, for anyone who might have wondered, we are currently living under a pall of acrid smoke from the fires near Bordeaux. This seems incredible, since Bordeaux is very nearly 300 kms. - or getting on for 200 miles - away from here and it just shows the intensity and scope of the fires. ( I'm assuming, Berni, since you haven't mentioned it, that you are further removed from the wildfires in Spain. I do hope so!) Fire services from all over France have been drafted in to help, as have the military. The final day of the Tour has been shortened since police who would normally have supervised the event are needed elsewhere. And we are expecting temperatures to rise again to the late 30s in the next few days. So much for climate change denial!

UkeCan1

UkeFoote Sheetz vs Wawa is the ultimate Pennsylvania debate.

I'm a Jersey girl (and Dave is a Jersey boy). We have only Wawa.

Edwin

Hello! Here's a short - even by their standards - They Might Be Giants song, since Weird Al's "Everything You Know Is Wrong" is a style parody of TMBG.

It's short, but they still don't leave you much room to breathe here…

"Marie Provost" Nick Lowe

Well the music is upbeat anyway.

UkeCan1

This was the first song that came to mind with the word "drag" - and The Beatles were in "Polkas on 45" plus the parody "Pac-Man" (Taxman"), so, twofer.

"A Day in the Life"

DesertPavement

The playlist has been updated and there are some (ok, at least one) opportunities for two-for-one’s (even if it does bend the rule of “newly recorded for this season”).

Sorry I have been so bad about listening and commenting on YT. Visiting family who live on the other side of the continent and whom we only see once or twice a year leaves little room for personal time. I will catch up after the season closes and my schedule has calmed down a little.

I'm multitasking this evening. I came right in after spraying a hornet nest in the eaves and recorded this video.

This is the song "Masquerade" by the '80s synth-pop band Berlin. One of their songs was included in the 1984 "Polkas on 45" on "Weird" Al's 3-D album.

potmo

"No Dancing" Elvis Costello

I was trying not to play E.C this week, but my hand was kind of forced due to my unwavering commitment to the twofer. It was this or "Mother's Little Helper" but I figured everyone would do that one. And I could done. I could have done "Positively Fourth Street", but I aready did Dylan and you would have had to suffer through the very last line of the song. So ... my Costelloholicism is still an issue.

PS @DesertPavement your submission to SOTU 754 is a twofer as NIN has the distinction of being an Al tune, so ... the only reason I bring this up, is because i was going to work on that song next, but only saw its relevance in this SOTU as my interpretation of 754 was we actually had to have the word "drag" in it.

OnlyUkeThatMatters

Yankovic's very first polka medley includes then-current Clash hit "Should I Stay or Should I Go."

So I have to play a couple of songs from the Clash's last - and not-so-good - album that came out a couple years later, Cut the Crap.

Here's "Are You Red.. Y"

And here's "Movers and Shakers"

And thanks to the wonderful "Weird Al" Yankovic and our amazing Seasons host DesertPavement Andy, my ukulele cover version of Cut the Crap is finally complete!

Bonus "WA"Y news from Portland, Oregon: My son, Sal, got into Weird Al's music this past week! He's sitting right next to me singing "Like a Surgeon" right now!!

potmo

"Under Her Thumb" Rolling Stones parody

DesertPavement

And that’s a wrap folks. Thanks to all you Seasonistas recent and prodigal for contributing so much music. And best wishes to Sal, as he begins his own journey with “Weird” Al. Time to drag ourselves over to 3 Birds current season. See you all in the funny papers.

@DesertPavement

A couple of weeks back I met a guy called John Du Prez through work, who mentioned that he was off to LA to do some conducting. Turns out he wrote the score for the Weird Al Jankovic film UHF in 1989, and is conducting the live orchestra at the 37th anniversary screening in LA on 31st October - see here! He also wrote the music for, amongst many other things, several of the Monty Python films! We had a good long chat about it all - he’s a really nice chap.
