Season 760 - Songs from the Great Folk Scare of the Sixties
My interest in playing music came when I first heard The Kingston Trio playing Tom Dooley in 1959. I learned my first 3 chords on my brother's Hofner arch top guitar and with two other members of the 76th Hamilton Scout Troop, formed a folk trio called The Rovers Three. I bought my first guitar in 1960, a Goya M-26 and started learning folk songs.
For all you Hootenanny Freaks, I'd love to hear some folk songs from the sixties or songs that sound as though they might have come out of that era.
What is a folk song? There have been many definitions of "FOLK SONGS" and no one seems to agree on what constitutes a folk song. Some sample definitions:
- If you know who wrote it, it ain't folk
- If it has gone through oral tradition it is folk
- If it takes more than 2 trips to get your gear from the car tho the stage, it ain't folk
- "All songs are folk songs. I ain't seen no horse sing 'em" - Big Bill Broonzy
- And of course:"a four letter word that begins with F and ends with K and if you use it your songs won't get played on the radio"
- Any semi-legitimate sounding definition will be accepted.
Q - How many folkies does it take to change a lightbulb?
A - Five. One to screw in the new bulb and four to complain about it being electric.
Rules:
• The video must be a new video recorded for this Season.
• The video must say that it is for the 760th Season of the Ukulele.
• Original songs in a folk-style are cool.
• A first time Seasonista may post any song that they are comfortable with. (Sorry about the preposition.)
• Don't post videos before midnight tonight, Hawaiian time. (And remember, Season 759 still has a day to go!)
• The Season lasts for 8 days, and ends at midnight Hawaiian time on next Sunday night.
Gypsey Davey - P.D.
This is a variation of the first song The Rovers Three ever performed on stage at a Boy Scout variety show in the basement of Binkley United Church circa 1960. We called it The Gypsy Rover, learned from The Brothers Four or The Kingston Trio or one of those groups. Since it is not yet midnight, this song will not be eligible for the season.
