While searching the caverns of my twisted mind for songs containing letters (677), the phrase "threw the letter away" peered out from the dust bunnies.
I looked it up ... and was reminded it's the climax of this objectively terrible 1974 song (#8 on Rolling Stone's readers' poll of "10 Worst Songs of the '70s") that I think many of us love to hate (676), making it the perfect Monday twofer.
Now if only I can dislodge it from the jukebox in my tiny brain, where it has taken up residence once again after nearly 5 decades of blessed silence....
"Billy, Don't Be a Hero", by Bo Donaldson and the Heywoods
(Those of you insisting it's Paper Lace, you are also correct. They had a #1 UK/Aus/NZ/Ireland hit with it, weeks before Bo's #1 US/Canada version that ruined my childhood. Fellow North Americans: we know Paper Lace from that other terrible song, "The Night Chicago Died".)
PS: the events in the song are tragic, and my apologies to anyone who has personally experienced anything like this - my heart goes out you. AND there are many, many much better songs about that.)
