Ooh, I can't wait to find out what your song is, John! I am not sure whether I might need to invoke the Thornton Rule with this offering. I LOVE this song, but I absolutely hate the fact that, with the World in its current appalling state, we really need to remind ourselves to follow the advice offered therein. This one made number one in the UK singles chart for a week in March 1980, and my mum loved it so much she bought the single and played it over and over for what seemed like months. The lyrics were very slushy, so no self-respecting teenage boy (as I was then) would dare to admit liking it, but like it I did.

I’ve slowed it down a bit from the original. Baritone uke with some synth bass, pads and a basic drum track.

I'm embarrassed to say, that when I first started playing uke in 2016, Hawaiian music was the last thing on my mind! I'm using option 3 here. I can't say I hated it, but I definitely did not like the first songs I was introduced to at meet ups. A couple of years ago at a party some of my students threw for my 60th birthday, serendipity showed up in the form a guest who was there looking for a few extra Hula dancers for professional Hula troop. One of my students teaches Hula. Long story short, she invited to join her for paid performances, and I began to learn dozens of Hula songs. I quickly went from not liking the genre to loving it! Today I suggested to Kimi we should do a Hula song. Timing was perfect on her end, as her daughter Lydia (Plasma Riot) was visiting. They recorded a live take of Hanalei Moon, sent me the file, and I added a picking uke part and a harmony. Here's Kimi, Lydia & kev doing Hanalei Moon:

an improvised 40second song, John.

I found a drum beat on Garageband that I don't like and spoke the words in the song in a cringing way. Also, the sopranino I was plucking was not in tune. The ringing in the audio is from the bell itself. This is under the category of "songs I don't like and in a genre I don't like". But, I ended up having fun making the video.

I never got this song , but just the other day I was experimenting with a new technique of partially barreing the neck with one of them there doohickey mafia bosses.

This makes an A chord with an open E. Anyhoo, the idea is that you play using the D shaped triad chords and so I started noodling.....and this came into being. I don't know if Yazoo or the Flying Pickets would approve, but thhhhhhh (raspberry).

Its still a work in progress and warts and all, but me likey now !! Only started doing it this week as well, so its a genuine ephinaficationory situation.

You may get the idea from the opening remark !!

So this is my entry for Songs You Love to Hate. I recorded a little bit of this John Lennon song straight into my phone with the song Cubs In Five by the Mountain Goats playing in the background. Footage taken around our home and on our walks and wander around town, with my super old digital compact camera.

When I visited Hawaii back in the 90's I heard a lot of Don Ho's music, and I referred to it as elevator music at the time. This was long before I ever played or owned an ukulele! I can't say he's my favorite, but I've learned and actually enjoy playing a few of the songs he made famous for the Hula dancers I work with. When I put this one up on Ila's season I said it would qualify here as well, but I had done it before your season officially started. Well, here it is again done at a Lunar New Year Celebration on Wednesday, and I'm providing the music for a small group of Hula dancers:

I was watching the woman's cricket yesterday and i thought cricket has probably the most unflattering outfit for women (also for men). Those pants….Although I don't mind it so much because it looks comfy enough.

this song is widely regarded as a classic Oz Rock song, the kind that grown men in bars grab each other and start swaying and singing and spilling beer to. i never liked it though and yes, Australian Crawl have written some good songs and James Reyne's voice is idiosyncratic and unique in music and lots of people love it but i'm not one of them. it makes me want to go to the toilet and i can barely understand a word he says. ironic, at least to me, that this song is from an EP called Semantics lol. i guess this is in the category of 'songs i love to hate'. 🙂

Morning Seasonistas. We’ll all be off out for our weekly Parkrun in a bit, but I had time to sit down and listen to Kevin, Joo and Jon’s fabulous submissions. Interesting observation about the little fish at the bottom of the page on our mobiles @joo . Does look kind of non-plussed. I see there is an option to remove the footer but I kind of like his/her fishy presence there. Will check in later. TTFN

This song details an incident in my youth of which I was thoroughly ashamed afterwards and plagued by guilt.

Obsession (1991) is a song by Swedish 'camp' disco band Army of Lovers. I both hate to love it and love to hate it, so it's complicated. 🙂

Ah, guilty pleasure, coming right up. I first heard this song, and the description of the performer as a “closet” fan of the artist, 13 years ago when Jake and Bruce Shimabukuro played an instrumental version at the Uke Fest in Oahu. I am not an adolescent girl, and never have been, but II do love this song, The guilty part comes not from that I love it, but how much I love it. Hope you like it.
