Welcome to Season 682 of the Ukulele - Second track! Hidden track!

Hello everyone!

This is what we do this week-

1. play the second track of any album;

(EDIT: if you have only 5 minutes to test out a 12 song album, which tracks would you listen to? For me I would play the first and last track briefly, but it is the second track that I would listen to. Interesting, there are articles online where people talk about the second track being the best.)

2. play the hidden track of any album.

(EDIT: hidden tracks are a delight! They often DON'T FIT into an album's concept. A misfit!)

3. If you write your own song, play us one that you think is your best!

Or one that you think you have or will put as the second track of your album! You can also play us a song of yours that is different from the songs you normally write.

Or try writing a song with the idea of Number 2, or Hidden.

Usual rules apply.

This was the second track from Juice Newton's 1982 album Quiet Lies. It was one of her big hits. First time using my new concert ukulele.

it IS related to my theme of "second track". Please lemme elaborate.

When I was in art school, me and some of my friends had always thought that the second track of an album was always the best. Whenever I went to HMV or Tower Records in Singapore, I loved testing out albums, and if the second track was a weak one, forget it. LOL. I loved those testing stations. Some people would be there all day. If there was someone in the queue I would just determine an album's worth by the second track.

Interesting, when I asked Jon about his opinion on the second track of an album, he thinks the same.

So there you go - share an old video/song you have done, either a cover or an original, that you consider your BEST, one which you would put as the SECOND track on your album, assuming you also think the second track position is crucial and you should put your best track there. :--)

When I posted the intro for this week, I wanted to make it as brief and clear as possible, since it seems to be true of me that the more I write the more confusing it can be, sometimes. LOL.

I was really excited about this theme!

It has never been done before! Not once in all these years!

I dunno about you, but I LOVE enjoying an album as if it was a book!

The intro is important, but the second track ….i mean you can't have a weak second track! Period! No one is gonna read on or listen on!

I am excited to be hosting this and I am excited to see what you all will bring! I shall now go and check out Alan's song!!!

I’ve never thought about that before Joo but when you mentioned it last night when we were chatting, I thought it was interesting. I’ve been checking out all sorts of albums today and there really are some good ones!! 😊 In fact, one of the second tracks I looked at was a song that was very influential to me at a certain time in my life so I thought ‘See..that Joo is onto something here..’ 😆

it's the 2nd song from a homespun album i recorded back in 2009 under my old moniker

of Eugene Ukulele called 'Loves Past and Present',

and it's full of lots of old-time folk songs i love

including this children's song, the second track from it - "Pigs in a Pen".

and a song from our walk along Snug Beach and Snug River this morning,

the 2nd song from Pete Seeger's legendary album 'American Industrial Ballads' (1956)

it will always be one of my favourite albums of all time, don't think any record has influenced

my love of music and the music i love to play more than this one 🙂

this song is called "The Blind Fiddler"

It's been a while since I played something from this book for the Seasons. Tony Mizen's arrangement of Schiarazula Marazula is the second piece in his Hal Leonard ukulele songbook From Lute to Uke - Early Music for Ukulele.

My book still came with a cd, but maybe it's a link where you can download the mp3s if you buy it new.

Another Juice Newton song. This was track #2 from her 1981 album Juice. She had three big hits from that album, but this wasn't one of them. It was written by country songwriter Bob McDill, who wrote literally hundreds of songs, many of them hits. In spite of this song having a problem with hitting the charts, a lot of people like it. It has been recorded by numerous artists, including non-English versions in Czech, German, Swedish, Estonian, and Dutch. The only time it ever charted was when it got to #19 in 1983 for the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. It was track #3 on their album Let's Go. The three big hits from Juice were "Angel of the Morning" (track 1), "Queen of Hearts" (track 4), and "The Sweetest Thing I've Ever Known" (track 10). I've always thought this was a very good album without any weak songs. It also includes two covers that were previous hits for other artists: "All I Have To Do Is Dream" (the Everly Brothers) and "Country Comfort" (Elton John). Juice Newton was the first to record this song.

Great theme! Particularly challenging because I have not consumed music in this way for so many years…but I have a few I remember.

[TCKRULE]I originally wanted to do “Cool kids”, the second track off Screeching Weasels Bark Like A Dog album, because they were my favorite band in my twenties. Regretfully no lead sheet for that song exists . Funny, I spend every morning greeting all my kids with a “how are you” and a fist bump before school, and a dad pulled up and said “Mr. L, you like punk right?”

“Well sure I do!”

“You going to this show?” And he hands me a flyer for Screeching Weasel and The Queers playing a show on the west coast.

“These were some of my favorite bands when I was younger- would love to see them again!”

“I play bass for Screeching Weasel- you are on the guest list.”

So I will be asking him to write a lead sheet for me after we talk about how a Santa Rosa CA native ends up in a band that is based in Chicago, while I give his kindergarten son (he is clearly the youngest in the band) and preschool daughter fist bumps. I love my job, and hope to bring that song.

For tonight, Melissa reminded this was a number two, and I love it almost as much! Two camp counselors fell in love, made a band, fell out of love, and left really great sounds in their wake. This is track 2 off the Everybodyfields Nothing Is Ok. I deleted my entire account last time I played it- seems I ought to trot it out again. [/TCKRULE]
