Season 711 - Half a century away

I believe that whether or not to include a winner is at the discretion of the host. Some folks award a prize, some do not. I could never decide on a winner, so the times I decided to award prizes, I made it a drawing rather than a talent show.

Ila’s ‘wrap’ post is at the end of her Season 710 thread - here’s a link to it: click here

Most hosts will wrap up their Season in a similar way when it’s ended, and if they are offering a prize will confirm winner/s in their post. It will often take a few days (sometimes longer) for them to post their wrap, hence they will notify everyone in a following Season when it’s been posted, so that it doesn’t get missed.

If you haven’t already, it’s well worth taking some time to read Edwin’s excellent FAQ here to answer any other questions you may have about how the Seasons works. Or do as you did here and just post your question in a thread.

I hope all that helps 🙂

I will get Tuesday rolling with a track from one of the albums in the picture I posted. "Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy" was Elton John's mostly-autobiographical account of his early years, as told by the lyrics of Bernie Taupin. It has always been my favourite album of his, and apparently is his favourite too.

I was out of town for the week-end, and driving home this song came on the radio, which I hadn't heard for years, and I thought it would make a good ukulele song. When I got home I see what this season is, and coincidentally this song was from 1975. Wings' B-side country ballad, Sally G

Doc Watson's MEMORIES LP came out in 1975. The cover photo is the only picture I have seen of Doc with a beard. It contains a song that Maggie and I used to do and Kirby & Yates have also recorded, an old folk song called MAKE ME A PALLET ON YOUR FLOOR.

DelGriff Thanks! I did read it, but that one whooshed by. Thanks.

Thanks for hosting, Steve. One might definitely say I stretched my boundrries on this one, but it is the kind of song that rarely finds its way onto a pop chart. I was in high school in '75 and I have no recollection of it impacting me much at the time, but since we are thinking about '75, looking back made it pretty relatable. I believe this qualifies as "out of my comfort zone". Sorry for the less than stellar recording, but I just really like the song.

This guy doesn't even say the name of the song! By the way I believe this qualifies as a twofer. (…"that love was made for beauty queens…")

Another catch-up done, and some songs which I either hadn't heard before or didn't associate them with 1975. For good reason, in Jim's case!

Fifty years ago today was the "Thriller in Manila" Ali vs Frazier part 3. Now I feel old…

potmo

It is hard to look back 50 years and think "wow that was 50 years ago?" . I remember the first Ali Frasier fight. In my mind, at that time, Ali was just arrogant. That was the hype at the time. Then I realized just how cool the guy was.
He was so sharp and had so much integrity. And he was so entertaining here.

Barbablanca

I have just got back from a three thousand and seven kilometre trip around Spain over the last fourteen days. I was so busy being a tourist that I didn't have a chance to listen to the Royalty week. I did however write a song in response to the theme. However, I had no means to post to the week as I didn't have my PC with me, not my video camera.

I have posted the song to SOTU 710 - It's about a certain would be Emperor. In case you'd like to hear it, here is a link to it on youtube:

I hope to contribute to this theme soon.

dr_mitch

Thanks for hosting. My first attempt I didn't even upload to YouTube as I realised after recording that it was from 1973. Oh well. Here's one that's probably from the correct year - Wish You Were Here from Pink Floyd.

AlanDP

I thought somebody needed to do this song, so here is Barry Manilow's power ballad from 1975.

YorkSteve

Want to hear AlanDP hit a very long high note at the end of a Barry Manilow song? You've come to the right web page.

When Steve mentioned that he had also done this theme way back in Season 197 ten years ago, I thought that I'd look back and see what my brother Randy did for that season, and maybe do one of those songs. While one of his songs was something I'd never attempt, the other not only was doable, but I thought it would make a good duet. So, through the magic of electronics, here are me and my big brother doing Ringo Starr's 1975 remake of Only You for Seasons 197 AND 711

Hi Steve … I've just returned from heaven-only-knows-where and when I try to play some of the videos; namely Alan's and Berni's (working backwards), I'm getting Error 153 (video player configuration error). Perhaps it's just me.

YorkSteve

LimousinLil mmm…I think it is you. I can play them OK. With my ex-Help Desk head on, have you tried turning it off and back on?

LimousinLil

No probs … it probably IS me, although I've no idea why. I'll try accessing them straight from the Playlist. Thanks for checking, Steve!

UkeFoote

My medley of 43 songs from 1975. Played on concert ukulele with singing and whistling. Thanks for hosting, Steve!

Yes, I've started getting that all the time when I try to listen on this thread. Terribly frustrating now that I'm trying to seriously limit my YT time to get away from all the polarisation sh*t that comes up.
