"Angel Delight", by Fairport Convention (1971).
Once in a great while, a band writes a song that is so specific and detailed about their own experience that it would be ridiculous for anyone else to play that song. So naturally I have always wanted to cover one of these songs! Alan played one earlier this year (The Mamas and the Papas, "Creeque Alley", the one that goes "and no one's getting fat except Mama Cass") and I was jealous of him.
This song is about Fairport's time spent living in a decrepit rented house called the "Angel". The line "There's a hole in the wall where a lorry came in" refers to one morning when a truck missed the turn and smashed into the Angel at 6 AM -- violinist Dave Swarbrick would have been killed, except he'd had to move his bed away from the window the previous day to accomodate some antiques he'd bought.
The song name-drops three of the four band members: "Dave the Drum" (Mattacks), guitarist Simon (Nicol), and (Dave) "Pegg on the bass". Swarb is only referred to as "the Mighty Glydd". "John the Wood" was their engineer/co-producer John Wood.
