Hanukah’s Flame
Lyrics by Woody Guthrie, music by Frank London of the Klezmatics.
This song is about offering the warmth of a Hanukkah home to a lonely traveler bearing a “life long heavy load”. Lyrics include words like “road” and “way”. I dedicate my performance to my brother @potmo with the wish that, as he journeys, he will find kind souls to invite him in to “rest a day”
(I know it’s early for Hanukkah but I am leading a group called the Hanukuleles, and I have to start working on our repetoire).
If it that is not a self-evident that my entry qualifies I offer these two additional persuasive arguments
- Anything by Woody Guthrie should qualify since he was tbe quintessential bard of traveling.
- Its partially original—this is the ukulele world premiere! The chords and music are not available so I had to figure out the chords and harmonies just by listening. That’s at least a little original.
Finally I wish I had time for a few more takes! I am working with a new backup singer who seems to be getting the hang of harmony, but she could use more practice. But, lest the perfect become the enemy of the good, or even the so-so, I am posting this anyway. I hope you enjoy it.
Finally, I wrote a bit about Woody Guthrie’s connection to Judaism in the description of the YouTube video.
