"potmo's Been Everywhere" NOT by Johnny Cash !
(potmo is not capialized so I am leaving it uncapitalized at the betginning of as title for emphasis. Also, don't call me 'Dave')
I usually take a peek at ye ol' Wikipedia when I work on a song, to figure out what they mean, see if they actually wrote it and if there is an interesting story. This time, I was actually quite surpised to see that "I've been everywhere" is an Australian song originally, and it really works nicely. Australia just has too many cool sounding names of places. I actually toyed around with trying to learn it but nah too hard for this yank.
These days, a major journey for me is when I decide to go pick up the pizza instead of having it delivered to me, but there was a time when I got around. So, being one who likes to tally, I decided to see what I could come up with using as many "real" places as I could. I think I did pretty well!
I am not thrilled with my performance but I have an inexplicable pride in both the composition and the fact that I have been not everywhere but a heck of a lot of places.
I actually broke it down on you tube listing where I lived where i stayed multiple nights where i spent at least one night etc. But you guys luckily get aggregate totals! Can it get any better?
Save Time and avoid reading below unless you want to know about where I have lived and how good my song did of documenting it.
The song only named 10/ 48 states and 2 of 3 canadian provinces that I have been to but as far as actual places I have lived, almost everywhere is covered.
The exceptions are Cambridge, Grand Junction, Lafayette GA already covered here indirectly and the ones missed are
The Society of Brotherhood, a sort of commune of Unitarians that lived collectively and built toys. I stayed there when I was 4 for a summer.
Kibbutz Mashabeh Sadeh
Cambridge, MA and the big miss...
VEGAS BABY
15 countries. This matches the total number of countries I count as having been in(There may have been a brief drive through Monaco, we were docked in South Hampton and Cyprus. I do count Iceland even though we were just at the airport but since we left the plane I count it.
- 8 countries are named and those not named all have cities(and/ or provinces) in them mentioned.
- Italy, Netherlands and Israel are both mentioned as are cities in those countries.
26 names refer to places I have actually lived. There are duplicates and States involved.
The total unique places that I lived in that are referenced is 21. Only a few missing places that I have actually lived in are not referenced.
19 named cities refer to places I have slept over two weeks total in.
18 named cities refer to cities I have spent at least a night in.
Four states and one province which don't have cities named in the song are named. They are: Texas, Louisiana, Indiana, Oklahoma and Nova Scotia. They could be added here as I have definitely slept at least one night in all of them.
The places that aren't in any other categories are places that for the most part I just drove by or stopped in, but I did it multiple times.
The remaining places, for the most part are places I know well and have driven through or at least past the exit on numerous occasions.
Ocho Rio was a cruise stop in Jamaica. I did not spend the night there and didn't pass it multiple time but hey it is Jamaica.
Framingham, I probably drove past a few times and it is also saw a couple of Patriots games there and some concerts.
Birmingham is really the weakest one. I probably have only past Birmingham once or twice. I don't know if I have even stopped there, but I do hear that it is a pretty progressive city for Alabama.
I passed the Los Gatos exit a few times on my way to and from Bay 101, but that is pretty week too. Other than that – pretty solid.
I have no idea why I am tallying or sharing. Then again I have no idea why I post crappy videos either. I guess it is fun to reflect back and I am pleased that I wasnt just pulling names out of my ass. Tally Ho!
I get this count subbing Colorodo with Grand Junction Israel with Mashabeh Sadeh, combining dalton and chatanooga for my place in GA, replacing Boston with Cambridge.
There are only two other places that I have lived in that didn't make the list. A place called "The Society of Brotherhood" in up state NY that my family lived at for a summer and VEGAS BABY. I am not sure why Vegas didnt make it.
