Seasonistas Play Other Instruments

Here's one round of Arkansas Traveler. I played the lead on guitar, and backup on ukulele. I was able remember enough, to play a break on guitar.

"Bogalusa Strut" played on the Roland AE-01. Backing track made with ChordPulse.

A progress video to help me keep track of my homework.

I've been working on this treble for two months and it's still a work in progress. However, I am not unhappy with where I am:

I'm playing from the manuscript, not a neat and tidy version
I am using my own preferred fingerings, different from the principles my teacher taught me
although unorthodox, teacher approves of the alternative fingerings
position shifts are in good spots and I can play the piece at speed
last layer is adding the ornaments, and she's very happy with my touch!

The next lute duet I've been working on is coming along. I wanted to commit it to YouTube, because my teacher sent me an arrangement for three lutes yesterday. She has removed the bass from both parts, so that she can play a more elaborate continuo part tomorrow. I'm always pleased I get to strum with two other ukes. You can imagine how excited I am to play with two other lutes!

A transatlantic collaboration with my friend Mel. Way outside my comfort zone with this one, but it was a lot of fun. :-)

During the GREAT FOLK SCARE, three members of the 76 Hamilton Boy Scout Troop formed a folk trio to play at a Scout Gang Show, a term that Scouts used to describe a variety show. We learned three chords and three songs and went on stage in the basement of Binkley United Church in Hamilton, Ontario.
I got one free shot at animating a still photo on an ap and I chose this one. L to R - Gary Yates, Jim Cox, Jim Yates

I just found this on another forum I’m on……can’t believe this is 5 years old!

This is not me actually playing anything. It's a little piece that I composed using Musescore and recorded it by hitting the play button. I was trying to write something that sounded like it could be from the early 1900s and was maybe a dance or some silent film music. The title came from a friend of mine when I played this little melody I had thought up a long time ago. He said it sounded like the music was saying "when the ghosts come creeping" and a few more lines that I can't remember. I tried to be realistic about how it was written so that a real piano player would actually be able to play it.

A little piece that I wrote and tried to play on the Roland EWI using the built-in "clarinet" sound. I still need a lot of practice to get my tongue and fingers to work together again. And to think 40 years ago I could have played this on my sax without even trying hard. It has a recurring theme, but with a little variation each time, and I never can think of good titles for instrumentals, so for now I'm just calling the F Major 7 Piece. The backing track was made with ChordPulse.

Just downloaded the latest version of the DAW I use - and so while playing around with it…

Another experiment that doesn't involve a ukulele. A little piece based on the ChordPulse progression sample called "ballad improv" using a Roland AE-01 to play a tenor sax sample from decentsamples.com.

It's a repeated 8-bar progression that goes like this: Dm7 Gm7 C FM7 BbM7 Gm/E Gm6/A A.

The Roland was used as a midi controller only.

Hello folks! Sorry I haven't been around much lately. Stuff seems to happen on the days I used to have free for recording songs, but I'm sure I'll be taking part again soon enough. Nevertheless, I did record this one this morning because I got a shiny new thing yesterday. I'm putting it under "other instruments" because by the time it's a baritone with 8 steel strings, we're drifting quite some way from a ukulele sound. But I love it anyway. (And I'm going to call it a ukulele whatever anyone else says.)

Basically I was browsing for an inexpensive backup for my 8 string for when I inevitably break it again. But instead I saw that there was a small run of these things and, mysteriously, a couple of days later, one turned up at my door. How could such a thing happen?

Nice Edwin! Here's Nick Reynolds, of the original Kingston Trio, with his 8 string tenor guitar tuned DGBE. Since he was a ukulele player, Nick often capoed at the fifth fret to make his tuning GCEA.

Transatlantic collaboration on a beautiful Tori Amos song with my friend Mel, and not a uke in sight.

Was looking for something… I can't remember now what it was… but I came accross this recording from my visit to Tasmania in 2020. It never got posted anywhere. Featuring Jon Duncan on camera.

An old one with me on the Joanna….

Hello folks! I hope you're all doing well. For whatever reason I've been bad at posting to the Seasons lately but I have been spending some time bashing away at the piano, which I'm finding a lot of fun at the moment. Even if I treat it like an 88 string ukulele most of the time. Here's a thing I've just done…
