SONGS YOU HATE TO LOVE

While taking my walk down the Waterfront Trail, songs will often be going through my head and sometimes coming out of my mouth.
One day in the past I had a tune come into my head that I loved, but I couldn't put any words to it. It wasn't until I got home and sang it to Maggie that she identified it as :Stephen Foster's Massa's In De Cold, Cold Ground and I realised that I could not perform it. Now that I realise what it is, I can't even play the tune without hearing the lyrics, but I wish I could enjoy the wonderful tune the way I did that first time on the Port Hope Waterfront Trail.

The back story is that this record nearly never got made.* But I saw this on TOTP in '74 and instantly took to it.......Much to the disdain of my fellow school chums....lol.

Endlessly endearing and I hate to love it because I , nor most people cannot sing all of the bloody thing..For obvious reasons if you are familiar with the song. So I really have given it a two day crack and multitracked the vox. (nooooo).

Something that I have noticed lately is that the mix changes as you move the audio files from cubase to Filmora and then again when uploaded to the tube ….is it me or is there a reason for this…..it is Feffering exasperating !!??

Thanks JITN! Here's a guilty pleasure from me. This used to be part of a drunken medley party piece from younger days. As well as this there was Drunken Sailor, TV' themes of Jim Bowie and Daniel Boone and more.

I'll spare you the medley so it's just " Donald where's your troosers" by Andy Stewart.

Speaking of things Scottish any contact with Rob anyone ? Hope he is doing ok.

Here's one I hate to love because, like Graham, I grew up Rock. But I've always had soft spot for sweet melodies, and my love for Karen Carpenters voice is off the charts.

And……I have introduced a 3rd category of song. Songs you used to hate, but now you love. I only thought of this because earlier this morning I happened upon a vid of Richard Thompson playing 1952 Vincent Black Lightning. I used to loathe that song. When I saw him live I knew he would play it at some point, and think oh well, I’ll just have to get through it. I can’t recall when that changed, or even why I came to love that song when it was certainly my least favourite song of his. I can’t even recall what I disliked about the song, when it’s clearly so brilliant. Anyway, if any of you have a song that you used to hate but now you feel the opposite, I’d love to hear it.

Here’s one from your host. Not the one I intended to do, but listening to Steve’s ace cover of Hot Stuff ( were we all doing the Full Monty pelvic thrusts? ……just me then…) I jokingly suggested he do Love To Love You Baby, another hit for Donna Summer. But that gave me the sudden inspiration to do I Love To Love, which was a big UK hit for Tina Charles in 1976. I know I didn’t think much of it at the time. I was into Rock. This was (shudders!) Disco!!!! But of course, with time songs don’t seem quite so awful to your, perhaps more mature, more developed, sensibilities. So I guess this is either guilty pleasure, and/or song I used to hate but love now. And I do. This is a fabulous song. Well, not my very short cover, but Tina Charles original in any case 👍

I think this one is in the "hate to love" category. Yes, it's John Prine, and any John Prine is a pleasure - and not a guilty pleasure. This one has some terrific lyrics; it's a classic song.

But the domestic violence portion of the first verse makes it one I've not recorded before, and probably wouldn't perform before an audience. It makes the lightness in the song hard to get to (even if the contrast is sort of the point of the song). So I sort of hate that I love this one.

Anyway, here it is - That's the Way the World Goes Round.

I'm not sure I believe in guilty pleasures. I reckon if I like something it must be because it's good so I refuse to be guilty about it!

So this is very much in the 'songs I love to hate' category. In subject matter, lyrical content and presentation - a thoroughly objectionable and inexplicably popular piece of crap from Denmark/Norway in 1997.

I take the role of sexy bimbo and Paul is the loudmouth knobhead. Stereotyping? It's impossible to say…

Many (many) years ago, I was at the microphone, introducing Mr Bojangles, when someone yelled out, that's a sad song. I then went into a vamp where I said, yes, it's about a drunk with no self-respect, in jail, a dancing fool, grieving over his deceased dog. You know what, we're not playing this one tonight. I owe you a beer.

I'm probably not gonna make it back to record this for you, John. I owe you a beer.

Renaissance-Man a song I love, but don’t want to perform. The lyrics are completely tragic.

This jingle is a bit like Jingle Bells during Christmas to me. You can hear it la lot during Lunar New Year.

I don't like it so much, after being bombarded by it all my life . But with Jon singing it with me, it is cool.

Today is the second day of the Lunar New Year. :--D

English translation:

In every street and small alley, everyone congratulates the people they meet on the start of a new year.

"Gong Xi Ni" means "Congratulations to you".

We play this in front of the whirligig which Todd Andrew Cole made for us. That's us playing our ukes on a canoe.
