Hi Andy, thanks for hosting and for your generous offer of a donation. Here, since you asked, is one of my FAWM songs for this year. It's just a little song called "Pronouns" and it's about grammar. I mean, what else could it be about?

Not only is it for our host, it's for some other people who I'm sure know who they are. I sang this at an open mic at an LGBTQIA+ friendly pub in Dundee a couple of weeks ago and the host said, "Could you be any cooler? Can I cover that?"

Nobody's ever asked me that first question before… but the answer to the second one is a resounding, "Yes, please do!"

Hello again, Andy! Since I've already dedicated a song to Merlin, the puppy, who hasn't even arrived yet, I thought it was necessary to bring something for the cats. I couldn't get either of them to "knead" for the video - Seamus usually does it every evening when he is sitting on top of me, watching the telly; but yesterday evening, he refused to oblige. If Margot does it at all, it's normally in the middle of the night. Anyway …

During FAWM I got to collaborate with a couple of people by providing a melody for their lyrics. One of these collaborators is Elizabeth Petty, who I have worked with in past FAWMs. I was so glad to continue this tradition. She is a great sensitive lyricist and an incredibly prolific one. She managed to write over a hundred and fifty lyrics in the month of February this year! That's ten times the number of lyrics (14) that FAWM participants are expected to produce!

It was difficult to choose the lyrics of hers to try and put to music to, but this one sang itself to me while I was reading the lyrics and I just grabbed my digital recorder and got the basic idea down. Later I worked out the chords and this is the result.

My Buddy - Gus Kahn & Walter Donaldson

When my dad died in 1980, my sister, Sharon and I bought the sheet music for this song and I learned it to sing for him. I have also sung it at memorial services for my brother Dave and my cousin George, but it doesn't have to be for someone who has died, but could well be sung to someone who has disappeared from your life for a while.
I'll send this one out to those buddies.

If anyone needs inspiration this week, I love hearing ukulele covers, of, oh, Tom Waits songs. Maybe They Might Be Giants songs. Perhaps even some Dylan. I will never not enjoy any of these.

It just seems quiet this week and I'm sad that we're not hurting Andy and Del's wallets enough.

This is an old one- the second song I played with Max. Cannot really call it an entry, but as he dies slowly at 7 years old I kinda gotta throw one out for him. ThS was not how things were supposed to go. He has been a great dog. Not one for the playlist, just for my heart.

Anyway, if I could play a new one for him I would. I cannot.

I've decided to give a shot at the #100daysUkulele2025 organized by the wonderful Cynthia Lin. I'm only on Day 5 with 95 to go! Since there are no themes to one's choice of song there, I've relied on using a couple different tools to point me to a random song to cover… Today, that landed me on The One I Love by REM.

Thanks for hosting, Andy - and this original instrumental’s for you. It’s called ‘Optimism’ - something I’m sure we could all benefit from right now.

I wasn’t planning to take part in FAWM this year, though I did eventually submit a song (see here). I also started writing this one as a keyboard/synth only song, but never quite finished it. So that’s what I did today, and added some baritone uke (with a dreamy effect) to make it legal for the Season. I’m sure it also really needs some lyrics/vocals, but I ran out of time and inspiration - maybe something I’ll get back to somewhere down the line. So it’s baritone uke with various synth additions and homemade drum track.

Here's my arrangement of seven musical themes by Leroy Shields from the Little Rascals movies of the 1920s. For ukulele ensemble featuring concert, baritone, and bass ukuleles, whistling, and glockenspiel. The Portland Ukulele Chamber Ensemble will be playing this and other pieces at our April 14 Recital. Alas, it was just too much to try to make this a performance video, so I've included stills from the Rascals to keep you visually entertained.

Dedicated to all my students and especially for those in the Portland Ukulele Chamber Ensemble.

This has absolutely nothing to do with the week, Andy, but just to cheer everyone up; it was World Book Day yesterday (I missed it!) Here is a photo of my very silly Son and his very silly Daughter, dressed for the occasion. Who could they POSSIBLY be? (I wish I could think of an appropriate song that I could dedicate to them. Actually, I might have done, but it'll have to wait, because I haven't learnt it yet!)

TOMORROW IS A LONG TIME - Bob Dylan for Charldene

I had forgotten this song and when I heard Charldene sing it at our Saturday Zoom jam, I recalled Ian & Sylvia singing it during the GREAT FOLK SCARE of the sixties, but had never heard anyone else do it. Thanks for the reminder Charldene and I'm sending this one out to you.

Sorry I haven’t been able to bring anything to this Season Andy, especially for such a just cause, but I simply haven’t had time. However, I am also making a donation to help Ukraine in its fight to defend itself against the bully in the Kremlin and his faithful lap dog in the Oval Office. Imagine writing that on a post for the Other Place 😂
